Job Summary:

Job Function:

Providetechnical support to the Veterinary Technology (VT) program, instructors,students, and administrators. Provide instructional assistance and support forVT laboratory sessions. Serve asclinical coordinator for VT preceptorship course and clinical laboratorycourses.

Essential Job Functions:

1.Assist in coordination of the acquisition of live animals for use in laboratory exercises and clinical labs.

2. Coordinate with veterinary clinics and hospitals, as well as veterinarians from outside the institution, for student laboratory activities including surgical rotations, preceptorships, completion of essential skills, and fieldwork with large animals.

3. Serve as a liaison in coordination of VT program activities with partner organizations and institutions, including but not limited to:OSU Center for Veterinary Health Sciences; OU Health Sciences Center; OKC Animal Welfare Division; Free to Live Animal Sanctuary; WildCare Foundation; City of Purcell Animal Welfare/Control, and other animal shelters or certified 501c3 non-profit rescue groups.

4. Update and maintain Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the VT program and off-campus clinical sites and suppliers, under the guidance and direction of VT faculty.

5. Assist instructors and students in Veterinary Technology classes.

Assist in evaluation of student-prepared medical records for patients. Assist in preparation of medical record forms.Assist with laboratory instructional activities including the set-up, administration and evaluation of laboratory practical exams.Dismantle labs upon completion, or supervise dismantle or reset by studentsTeach/conduct Veterinary Technology laboratory sessions and didactic lectures as a portion of the course content in areas of specific and exceptional experience or expertise.Assist in maintaining and updating the AVMA-mandated Essential Skills list for each student according to lesson/lab plans per the instructor of record for each course.Assist in evaluating student presentations, examinations, and other work.Assist in maintaining controlled drugs, anesthesia, surgery, radiation, and laboratory equipment logs.Work with ionizing radiation, i.e. x-rays.Maintain laboratory equipment (operate, secure, inventory, clean, perform quality control and instruct in use), laboratory supplies (properly handle, prepare, label store, and inventory) and Material Safety and Data Sheets (MSDS)/Safety Data Sheets (SDS).Assist the Department Head in maintaining AVMA-CVTEA accreditation standards and assuring that all policies and requirements are upheld. 6. Assist the Department Head in maintaining AVMA_CVTEA accreditation standards and assuring that all policies and requirements are upheld.

7. Function as a team member in the coordination of the Veterinary Technology program.

8. Assist with preparation/composition of documents, reports, bulletins and communications for the department and for classes.

9. Maintain laboratory equipment, operate, secure, inventory, clean, perform quality control and instruct in use.

10. Maintain laboratory supplies, properly handle, prepare, label, store, and inventory.

11. Maintaindepartmental inventory including (but not limited to) cleaning supplies,laboratory supplies, books/publications, office supplies

12. Serve as a role model to VeterinaryTechnology students.

13. Assist with student recruitment, admissions, and advisement activities.

14. Assist in supervising part-time veterinary technicians, work study students, temporary personnel and volunteer workers.

15. Assist with visitors, prospective students, facility tours, and handling of telephone calls.

16. Maintain strict confidentiality in all matters related to sensitive material including but not limited to student applications, records, grades, personal matters, faculty and staff planning sessions, patient/case work.

17. Assist with maintaining the departmental library with current textbooks.

18. Report building issues, such as safety or maintenance, to the appropriate campus entity for attention and repair as well as the appropriate personnel within the building.

19. May be asked to serve as a co-advisor to the Veterinary Technician Student Association.

20. Complete all mandatory training andmaintains good standing with the OSBVME

Education & Experience

Position Qualifications:

Education:
AAS in Veterinary Technology.

Work Experience:

  • Three years of practice experience as a registered veterinary technician in private clinical practice, veterinary academia, or veterinary industry.
  • Comfort in large and small animal handling and restraint, including some exotic species.
  • Ability to perform medical procedures and care for a variety of animal species including but not limited to dogs, cats, horses, cows, rodents, birds and reptiles.
  • Experience teaching technical skills and tasks to others in the specified formats preferred by the program and university.

Professional License and/orcertifications:

  • Must be a graduate of an AVMA accredited veterinary technician program and successfully passed the VTNE.
  • Must have Oklahoma Registered Veterinary Technician (Licensed/Certified) credential or be willing to obtain Oklahoma RVT credential via exam with the Oklahoma State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (OSBVME) as soon as possible.
  • Must have valid Oklahoma Drivers License or ability to obtain

  • Ability to manage multiple prioritiesimposed by frequent deadlines, peak workloads, and public/student contact.
  • Able to read and interpret complex written or printed materials such as instructions, charts, diagrams, maps, or instructional material.
  • Follow SOC (Standards of Care) per AVMA, USDA, and IACUC.

    Able to handle confidential information discreetly.
  • Willing andable to drive own personal vehicle (with compensation for mileage) and/or auniversity-owned vehicle to off-campus locations.
    • If driving auniversity-owned vehicle, the employee must be willing to transport students orother university approved passengers.
    • Training maybe required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in an academic environment.
  • Bachelors’ degree in Veterinary Medical Technology, education, science, or related field.
  • Experience in husbandry, handling and performance of common medical procedures on cattle, horses, and other animals used in the agricultural industry.
Working Conditions:

    Must not be adversely affected by (allergic or sensitive to) formaldehyde, any commonly used veterinary formulations or any commonly encountered domestic species to the extent that such allergy/sensitivity would impair job performance.Must be tuberculosis negative and agree to annual tuberculosis testing at own expense.

    Must, at own expense, be rabies vaccinated (assuming Human pre-exposure Vaccine is available) and maintain routine titer checks, and obtain booster vaccines as necessary or agree to sign a waiver of liability.

    Must be able to work outdoors in typical environmental conditions (rain, heat, cold, wind) with appropriate personal protective equipment.

    Must be able to work in a noisy environment with appropriate personal protective equipment.

    Must be able to work with and restrain a variety of animals including dogs, cats, cattle, horses, goats, sheep, pigs, birds, reptiles and lab animals.

    Must be comfortable working with large groups of people and/or animals.

    Will require occasional evenings, and weekends. May require occasional travel with overnight stays.

    May be occasional changes in work schedule due to participation in public relations, outreach, student advisement, and other campus activities.Must be flexible to occasional changes in work schedule.
Physical Requirements:

Must be able to safely manipulate and/or lift animals as necessary to perform tasks related to veterinary care and handling, with appropriate personal protective equipment.Position requires frequent lifting and carrying up to 45 pounds and may occasionally require lifting weight over 120 pounds with assistance, following proper lifting techniques.Must be able to operate manual cattle and horse enclosure and restraint equipment (corral gates, stocks, chutes, head gates, etc.) with appropriate cautions and personal protective equipment.Individual must be able to stand/walk approximately 7- 8 hours per day. Position requires frequent to continuous bending/stooping, squatting/crouching and pushing/pulling.Manual dexterity/visual ability to perform common veterinary medical procedures including but not limited to administering injections, placing IV and urinary catheters, positioning patients for various medical and diagnostic procedures, operating microscopes, refractometers and other diagnostic equipment.
