The National P-3 Center (Center), within the School of Education andHuman Development at University of Colorado Denver, has an exciting opportunityfor a Research-to-Practice Associate. We are seeking a new team member to lead aportfolio of work that bridges research and practice, with particular focus onPreK-12 school districts and elementary schools. 

 

Backgroundon the Center

The ultimate goal of the National P-3 Center is to improve the fulllearning continuum that children experience from birth (Pre-school)through 3rd grade. We recognize that race, class, culture, andzip code demand explicit strategies to mitigate their effects on children’slearning opportunities. We also recognize that children’s outcomes depend onimproving the programs, schools, organizations, and systems that serve them. Weunderstand and value both the early care and education (ECE) and K-12 systems,and engage strategically and collaboratively with leaders across the P-3continuum at state, school district, and community levels. 


We use three core strategies to achieve the Center’s mission: providingleadershipand professional learning opportunities, offering support and resources to guide effective implementationand practice, and conducting rigorous and innovative research andevaluation. These three strategies deliberately overlap and complement oneanother. For example, goals of our research are not only to contributegeneralizable knowledge to the field, but also to facilitate practioners’application of effective strategies in their home contexts. 


PositionResponsibilities and Qualifications

The Research-to-Practice Associate’s role will have particular focus onthe intersection between research and practice. We seek candidates who willbring strong PreK-12 expertise to our team. The essential functions of thisposition are to:

 Establish and sustain collaborative relationships with leaders in state government, school districts, individual schools, ECE programs, and other community organizations both locally and across the nation.Identify, nurture, and develop opportunities to learn from – and contribute to – innovative P-3 implementation efforts around the country.Develop and manage collaborative, mixed methods research-practice projects and/orstudies (e.g., research-practice partnerships).Design and lead efforts to build the capacity of organizations, systems, and leaders working across the P-3 continuum.Conceptualize andco-author Center publications and materials(e.g., reports, tools, briefs) that are appropriate for a variety of audiences(academic, practitioner, and policy).Staycurrent on the literature related to P-3 topics.Bringknowledge and understanding of the PreK-12 system, including organization andleadership structures, policy, history, and current issues.Collaborate with other Center staff to generate ideas and develop new and innovative projects.Contribute to idea development and cultivation of potentialfunders, providing content for grant-writing.Develop and deliver professionalworkshops and learning modules that engage practitioners, policymakers, andother stakeholders in the work of the Center.Perform other duties as deemed appropriate and necessary by the direct supervisor.

NOTE: This position requires weekly on-site work at ouroffice in Denver, CO. Telecommuting is not an option for this position.

Salary and Benefits:

 

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

A Master’s degree in educationadministration, educational leadership, teaching and learning, researchmethods, program evaluation, education policy, or a related field plus 3-5years of relevant experience.

 Conditions of Employment:
  • Must be willing and able to travelapproximately 4-6x/year.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • A doctoraldegree, with experience working inside higher education.
  • Experience as an elementary schoolprincipal and/or district level administrator.
  • Experience participating in diverseprojects, including large-scale research and small-scale technical assistancepartnerships.
  • Experience with mixed methods studydesigns that use collaborative approaches to build knowledge about improvementstrategies (e.g., Networked Improvement Communities (NICs), Research-PracticePartnerships (RPPs), and/or Design-Based Leadership/Systems Research).
  • Knowledge and experience navigatingboth early care and education (ECE) and PreK-12 systems, includingbuilding/maintaining relationships and recognizing/valuing the different organizationalstructures, regulatory contexts, and pedagogical values in each system.
 Desired Competencies:
  • Passion for the National P-3 Center’smission and vision.
  • Knowledge of, and experience in PreK-12education, including increasing leadership responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability toadvance equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Superior written, verbal, andinterpersonal communication skills.
  • Deep curiosity to learn from others and to not be the expert in the room, but a co-constructor of innovative and promising strategies.
  • Ability to establish and maintaineffective working relationships and partnerships, internally and externally.
  • Initiative, creativity, andwillingness to exert clear leadership, internally and externally.
  • Sound understanding of how to managecomplex problems in a continually evolving context.
