The Ithaca College Education Department (located in Ithaca, NY) invites applications for the position of Department Chair and Associate Professor. This full-time position begins August 16, 2020 (or earlier in the summer, if desired). Our new chair will be creative, possess a deep commitment to diversity, equity and innovative practice in education, and will articulate a well-informed vision for high quality teacher education. The position entails leadership of a growing department that offers undergraduate degrees in secondary education and art education K-12, and masters in secondary, childhood and agriculture education, as well as a robust education studies minor. As a department, we seek a leader who values collaboration, community, and the professional development of all department members. We are seeking outstanding candidates with a demonstrated commitment to supporting, empowering and retaining members of underrepresented groups. Responsibilities include coordinating curricular offerings; directing the undergraduate major and supporting the departmental coordinator of the minor; maintaining and developing community outreach and partnership programs; liaising with other department chairs and campus departments with teacher-education programs; overseeing budget, staffing, and accreditation; and creating an inclusive and affirming culture for faculty, students and staff. We seek a colleague with solid administrative, research and teaching experience who will lead the department and offer courses relevant to our mission and programs. The departmental chair leads with the chair of graduate studies in education, and is supported by the college’s placement, teacher certification and accreditation officers, who are administratively housed in the department. Further support comes from the steering committees for the minor, the urban education field experience, and spring speaker program.

The teaching load is 6 credit hours per year, with one or two 0-credit seminars. Teaching responsibilities may be spread over the year in a variety of ways. Areas of teaching specialization are flexible, but some areas of interest and need include: general methods in secondary education; secondary science education; modern language education; teacher inquiry and uses of assessment to improve instruction; innovative and effective uses of technology in education, and reflective practice in teaching and the supervision of student teachers

Position/Job Qualifications

Earned doctorate in a relevant field; evidence of administrative experience and college-level teaching related to teacher education; a record of scholarly activity; three years of full-time experience teaching K-12 or equivalent; demonstrated experience addressing issues of diversity and equity in education; and, overall, a record commensurate with expectations for tenure at Ithaca College. Rank and tenure status are dependent on qualifications and experience.

We are located in the School of Humanities and Sciences, with teacher certification programs at the undergraduate level in secondary education and at the Masters level in secondary, elementary and agricultural education. We teach courses for students in other teacher education programs on campus, including students from music, health and physical education. Our minor for students with an interest in the study of education as a social science and a path to social justice is now the second largest at the College. The shared department vision focuses on preparing teachers to be creative, culturally competent, critically reflective agents of change who work to achieve high quality education for all learners. Our work aligns directly with the College’s strategic plan, which is currently in the early stages of implementation.
