Job Description:


Community School Coordinators work within assigned schools to develop and implement the community school model. Although specific duties are defined by the needs of the school in which a coordinator serves, duties include:


Family Engagement:


  • Intentional outreach and engagement designed to connect families to the educational process of their children.
  • Develop opportunities to allow underrepresented parents a voice while providing schools with needed feedback from parents traditionally disengaged from school.
  • Develop and facilitate events that are designed to bring families together for fun and sharing.

Collaboration:


  • Collaborate with school administration and teachers to support strategic plans and fill identified gaps in service.
  • Work as a part of a team to develop and implement college student volunteers and interns.
  • Support strategic partnerships that strengthen and expand current efforts within the school.
  • Represent school district as needed at community meetings, college activities, and presentations.

Leadership:


  • Work with school administration to develop and implement the community school approach.
  • Serve on and/or facilitate assigned school teams representing community school concepts.
  • Provide leadership around tabling and participation in presentations as needed to promote the community school model.
  • Facilitate focus groups of administrators, teachers, school staff, parents, and students identifying areas of strength and challenges within the school.
  • Develop and document an inventory that outlines resources and gaps in service and ways in which the community school model will address these areas.

Support college volunteers and interns:


  • Plan with administration and teachers to develop a recruitment plan to leverage college students to support initiatives within the district.
  • Support placement and supervision of college interns and volunteers.

Programming:


School Day - work collaboratively with school staff to support students by providing:


  • Individual and group meetings with students.

After School - Support after school activities:


  • School lead activities as needed.
  • Individual and small group social emotional support.

Summer - support and facilitate summer learning opportunities:


  • Support recruitment for school and community summer learning opportunities.
  • Engage families to ensure connections to the educational process for their child(ren).

Administrative:


  • Maintain records and data necessary for program evaluation and reporting.


Requirements:


Qualifications include:


  • Bachelor degree required.
  • Masters in social work, school counseling, education, public administration, or related fields preferred.
  • Two years of post-graduate experience preferred.
  • Experience working with or in schools preferred, but is not required.

History

Binghamton University opened its doors as Triple Cities College in 1946, to serve the needs of local veterans returning from service in World War II. Originally located in Endicott, N.Y., five miles west of the present campus, the fledgling school was a branch of Syracuse University.

Four years later, the college was incorporated into the State University of New York (SUNY) and renamed Harpur College in honor of Robert Harpur, a Colonial teacher, patriot and pioneer who helped settle the area west of Binghamton.

In 1961, the campus moved across the Susquehanna River to Vestal. Growing enrollment and a reputation for excellence soon led to the selection of Harpur College as one of four doctorate-granting University Centers in the SUNY system.

In 1965, the campus was formally designated the State University of New York at Binghamton, and in 1992, Binghamton University was adopted as our informal name.
