The School of Health Sciences invites applications for a nine-month tenure track assistant/associate professor or a non-tenure track assistant professor of teaching in the graduate Athletic Training Program beginning in August 2020. Responsibilities of the position include teaching graduate courses within the Athletic Training curriculum, potentially teaching undergraduate course within the Athletic Training curriculum through May 2022, mentoring students, engaging in scholarly activities, and providing service to the university, profession, and community. Applicants with scholarly activity can be considered for a tenure-track faculty line.

We are seeking a team-oriented faculty member to work collaboratively with faculty within the Athletic Training Program, School of Health Sciences, and College of Health and Human Sciences. The Athletic Training program is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty and students. Salary and rank are commensurate with academic qualifications and experience. Opportunities for summer teaching with an additional summer stipend are available. Review of applications will begin in early November and continue until the position is filled. Start date is August 1, 2020.

Western Carolina University enjoys a national reputation as a leader in Athletic Training education. The program’s innovative curriculum and nationally renowned clinical education model were ground-breaking in the profession. Student engagement is a hallmark of the program. Students regularly attend and present at professional state, regional, and national meetings. Additionally, many students have been awarded NCATA, MAATA and NATA Foundation scholarships. The program has achieved a 98% BOC first-time pass rate since 2010. The Athletic Training Program is a CAATE-accredited program that is currently going through the substantive change process with the first cohort beginning June 2020.The program will have the next comprehensive review in 2021-2022. The MSAT is a 12-month program with courses occurring in the summer. Faculty will be compensated above their base salary for summer teaching.

The School of Health Sciences offers undergraduate programs in Athletic Training (through 2022), Emergency Medical Care, Environmental Health, Integrated Health Sciences, Nutrition & Dietetics, and Recreational Therapy. The Master of Health Sciences graduate program offers concentrations in Emergency Medical Care, Health Education, and Health Management. The Master of Science in Athletic Training begins in summer 2020. Additional programs within the College of Health and Human Sciences include Communication Sciences and Disorders, Nursing, Physical Therapy and Social Work. Duties and Responsibilities:
•Support the vision and mission of the Athletic Training Program, School of Health Sciences, College of Health and Human Sciences, and Western Carolina University.
•Develop and deliver courses within the Athletic Training Program.
•Mentor and advise students on their academic progress and professional development.
•Engage in scholarly activities and creative contributions within the profession based upon the Boyer Model of scholarship (for tenure-track faculty).
•Provide service to the university, profession, and community.
•Maintain currency in the academic discipline through continuing education, research, and/or participation in activities within the profession, including involvement within professional organizations at the state, district and national levels.
•Work cooperatively and collegially with all faculty and staff in the Athletic Training Program, School of Health Sciences, and across the institution.
•Carry out other assignments and duties as assigned by the Athletic Training Program Director, the Director of the School of Health Sciences, and the Dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this PositionMinimum Qualifications

• Doctoral degree in Athletic Training or related field (eg., EdD, PhD, DAT) from a regionally accredited institution. ABD considered if degree will be conferred by May 2020.
• Current BOC certification and eligibility for North Carolina licensure as an athletic trainer
• One year of clinical experience
• A research or scholarship agenda, as defined by the Boyer model, required for a tenure-track position

Preferred Qualifications

•Experience with a CAATE accredited program
• Service to the profession and/or community
• Three or more years of clinical experience
• Three or more years of successful teaching in athletic training
• Additional allied health credentials and professional certifications (e.g., CSCS, EMT, PT, OPE-C, OTC, ROT, or manual therapy)
• A history of effective classroom and/or clinical instruction in athletic training
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Commitment to student engagement and success
