DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, the Molecular Biology Laboratory Assistant will perform technical duties in a laboratory. Extract DNA from Cyanobacteria and perform downstream sequencing using in-house Nanopore technology. Evaluate the structure, function, evolution, mapping and degradation of Cyanobacteria DNA and genetic material.

Evaluate raw data and perform simple alignments of raw sequence data. Using Geneious platform, import and record extraction and sequencing data. Maintain tracking of all materials extracted. Using bioinformatics tools and practices, perform computational evaluation of sequenced and assembled genomes, and provide all of these results to PI.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from high school or a GED and three (3) years of laboratory experience; or two (2) years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and two (2) years of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience in basic molecular biology.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of genomics and genomic DNA with demonstrated knowledge of what will degrade it.

  • Demonstrated experience in DNA extraction.

  • Strong understanding of genomic technologies and experience in Nanopore technology and sequencing.

  • Proven ability to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot various lab equipment (rotovaps, vacuum pumps, microscopes, pH meters, and centrifuges).

  • Proven ability to operate, maintain and troubleshoot gel riggs, Nanopore sequencers, and gel imaging systems.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with standard laboratory practices using organic solvents.

  • Proficiency using standard computer databases and data entry. Strong experience using Excel spreadsheets.

  • Excellent verbal and written English language communication skills. Ability to communicate and work effectively with a diverse group of people.

  • Strong attention to detail and experience in having to be very meticulous and careful in work performed. Ability to maintain well organized and concise records. Ability to carefully follow instructions listed in protocols.
