Classification TitlePost-Doctoral Associate ADFLSAExemptUGA Job CodeJob FamilyFTE1.00Minimum QualificationsPosition Summary

Position will perform research on zooplankton ecology, primarily using existing imagery datasets from the northern Gulf of Mexico and Western Atlantic, while assisting principal investigator in evaluating and testing new plankton imaging and oceanographic equipment in nearby coastal environments. Examine how oceanographic and optical properties from existing datasets influence the distributions of various zooplankton taxa, with the potential to apply and evaluate image processing and analytical techniques, such as neural networks. Data sets include high-resolution plankton distributions, oceanographic (e.g., temperature, salinity), and optical data (PAR, chlorophyll-a fluorescence, optical backscatter) that can be combined to reveal new information about the biological and physical processes structuring plankton communities.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position

Ph.D. in Marine Biology/Ecology, Oceanography, or equivalent, with experience in analysis of oceanographic data, and a basic understanding of plankton ecology and taxonomy.

Familiarity with plankton collection methods and analysis of biological oceanographic data.

Previous experience working with large datasets and familiarity with at least one programming language, R or Python (preferred)

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Independently motivated and enthusiastic about research. Excellent command of the English language (written and verbal) and quantitative analytical skills are essential.
