The Controller is responsible for directing the institution's accounting, audit, and third party financial operations with a goal of maximizing return on financial assets through the establishment of financial policies, procedures, controls, strategic management, and reporting systems. Specifically responsible for the management of all accounting functions including: financial reporting (external and internal), financial systems development and maintenance, compliance with tax laws and other relevant rules and regulations; management of the audit function including both the external audit and internal audit; and for the development and management of affiliated 3rd party financial operations.
  • Develops and maintains financial management policies and procedures for the accounting and reporting of all college funds including endowment investments, restricted gift funds, and operating reserves. This includes ensuring that all policies and practices are consistent with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, federal costing principles, and other FASB pronouncements, and are consistent with the financial strategies of the College; and responsibility for the reasonable protection of confidential information related to the position, including establishing and maintaining policies and procedures consistent with best practices and federal and state laws.
  • Participates in the College's Audit, Investment, and Finance Committee Board meetings.
  • Closely monitors bank account balances to ensure funding levels are adequate to meet operating cash flow requirements; has signatory authority on College banking and investment accounts; reviews disbursements in excess of $10k weekly prior to releasing payments to vendors.
  • Manages the coordination of the year-end audit, including financial statement preparation in collaboration with external auditors; and management of all financial and tax compliance including Form 990 preparation.
  • Negotiates indirect cost rate agreement with federal agencies.
  • Manages post issuance debt compliance including financial and operational restrictions and reporting.
  • Develops, implements, monitors, and enforces internal controls relevant to the accurate reporting of financial transactions and the security of College assets. Manages the internal audit function in order to ensure the integrity of all management control systems and processes. In collaboration with other senior management, responsible for the assessment and evaluation of college-wide business risk.
  • Analyzes and interprets trends that require senior leadership attention; prepare financial and managerial reports and procedures and the presentation of findings and specific recommendations to top management.
  • Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; filing financial reports; and advising management on needed actions.
  • Recommend benchmarks for measuring the College's financial performance. Develop, implement, and review financial reports to ensure reporting requirements and needs are met, including application of managerial accounting principles and cost allocations.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; and participating in professional societies.
  • Provides direct leadership/supervision over the Financial Services, Financial Information Systems, Student Financial Services, and Accounts Payable functions. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with College administrators, faculty and staff members.

Education Requirements:

Minimum Level of Education Required MBA and/or CPA

Position Knowledge/Skills & Abilities Requirements:

  • A minimum of 15 years of successful and increasingly responsible leadership roles within accounting or financial management, financial planning, analysis, and reporting
  • Must have strong leadership and influencing capabilities, and the ability to effectively translate plans into tangible, achievable goals
  • Must have excellent financial, analytical, and business skills
  • Must be comfortable in hands-on management of multiple functional areas
  • Must have strong presentation, organizational, and reporting skills
  • Financial literacy with experience in general ledgers, income statements, balance sheets, and accounting terms.
  • Understanding of financial systems and how to use and improve them to the optimal efficiency
  • Ability to architect reports to be able to meet ever-changing requests and requirements utilizing multiple data sources, such as Workday and Adaptive Insights
  • Experience providing timely and complete monthly financial/budget reporting
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills, applied across problems of varying nature and scope; ability to identify potential areas for financial improvements and make necessary recommendations to leaders
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in working with a diverse student body, faculty, staff, and other constituents
  • Must have superior leadership and management skills with the ability to engage others through a democratic process, while serving as key decision maker
  • Ability to establish credibility and confidence with stakeholders
  • Must have exceptional collaboration and interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally and communicate effectively at all levels within an organization
  • Flexibility and willingness to assume new tasks and special projects
  • Must have strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to create an environment where direct reports have the freedom and security to take initiative; deal with complexities with resilience, resourcefulness, and optimism; and appreciate open mindedness, creativity, and agility in thought and tactics.

  • Must have working knowledge of GAAP and FASB accounting standards, as well as IRS requirements

  • Experience in analytics and report design of Workday Financials and Adaptive Insights software preferred
