Associate Vice President for Facilities Management and Capital Projects
The Associate Vice President for Facilities Management and Capital Projects will ensure the College’s campus and physical infrastructure can support and advance the CMC mission. Reporting to the Vice President of Business and Chief Operating Officer, and working closely with members of the President’s Executive Committee, the Board of Trustees, and across the Claremont Colleges, the Associate Vice President will perform strategic planning and management of all buildings, grounds and future plans for Claremont McKenna’s distinctive campus. This position is responsible for planning, budgeting and management for all existing and proposed facilities at Claremont McKenna, including new construction and renovations, preventive and corrective maintenance, housekeeping and grounds operations, energy and water conservation programs, and building access systems. The AVP is responsible for creating a culture of excellent service and support by partnering across the organization to achieve results. Projects will be delivered to the standards expected by CMC’s Board of Trustees. The AVP will have direct reports in operations and maintenance, project management, and facilities hospitality.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work closely with CMC leadership, including members of the Board’s Campus Planning and Facilities Committee, and various College stakeholders, to plan, prioritize and successfully lead a new era of campus development.
Spearhead the delivery of a 2019 Campus Master Plan over the next five to ten years, which includes a new integrated science building, additional sports fields and complex, new administrative spaces, residential spaces, a parking study for replacement parking and a campus life center.
Optimize the department and make recommendations for future staffing and organizational structure to build a team with a focus on accountability, project delivery and customer service.
Large Scale Upcoming Projects:
- Prepare and plan for all approval processes, both external with state, city and county, as well as internal stakeholder groups and Trustee committees, to implement East Campus and Science developments, including all required permits, budgets, timelines, plans, selection of consultants, etc.
- East Campus Planning and Build Out: lead RFP process, planning and execution of perimeter improvements, infill project, field planning for baseball, softball and overall athletics master plan.
- Science, Computation and Math Building Planning and Build Out: facilitate exterior design, space allocation, design plans, central plant facility, interiors, equipment and adjacencies for 100,000 square foot facility.
- Evaluate all CMC parking and coordinate a future plan to address capacity, needs, location, phasing and costs.
- Oversee and manage physical plant and all campus facilities and fields.
- Oversee annual summer maintenance program and all campus improvement projects.
- Oversee a project management office that executes all internal moves, construction and furniture purchases to meet needs of faculty, staff, and students.
- Develop and implement a CMC Campus Sustainability Plan, to include areas of energy and carbon emissions; stormwater retention; water conservation; waste reduction; and climate responsive design.
- Develop a Hospitality Function to facilitate on-campus events and summer conferences
- Implement best practices and routine bidding of projects over $25,000 to obtain best price for best value.
- Develop a Residential Life support team to facilitate move-ins and move-outs and other special needs such as ADA accommodations.
- Oversee campus grounds, landscape and signage programs.
- Manage housekeeping and custodial operations, both internally staffed and outsourced.
- Oversee all housing maintenance for nearly 70 CMC-owned, single-family homes
- Oversee building access systems.
- Oversee mailroom operations.
- Public Art Program coordination and installation.
- Master Planning Project and implementation, working with MRY consultants.
- Continually implement projects to address ongoing upkeep and maintenance of facilities in coordination with Sightlines planning efforts.
- Close coordination and support of Director of Security for Emergency Planning efforts and Clery Reporting.
- Close coordination with Student Affairs to support residential life, move-ins and move- outs and other special needs.
- Close coordination with Bon Appetit to ensure food venues are safe and clean.

Position requires a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, business or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
An advanced degree in engineering, architecture, business or a related field is highly desirable.
A minimum of 10 years of experience with increasing responsibility as a director of facilities or capital construction is required. Experience should also include demonstrated successful leadership in facilities management, budget management, staff supervision, construction and renovation project management.
Experience dealing with engineers, architects and contractors on large construction and renovation projects is required.
Experience at an academic institution or in a non-profit setting is strongly preferred.
