General Description / Primary Purpose

The successful applicant will lead UNF’s middle and secondary mathematics education program and teach courses related to mathematics education and computational thinking on campus and at UNF’s Professional Development Schools. This person will work with undergraduate and graduate teacher preparation programs, supervise student teacher interns, serve on dissertation committees, assist in the development of a STEM+C education graduate program, and other instructional duties (determined in accordance with the needs of the Department and the College and the faculty’s areas of expertise). This faculty member will join an interdisciplinary team promoting computer science education with local school district partners. Active participation in research and scholarship within mathematics education and or mathematics teacher education, resulting in reputable peer-reviewed publications and presentations, is expected. Involvement in relevant professional service at the local, regional, and/or national level is also expected.

Essential Duties

Job Function

•Teach undergraduate and graduate middle and high school mathematics education courses;
•Supervise practicum experiences when needed;
•Conduct and disseminate research in mathematics education and/or mathematics teacher education;
•Collaborate with local teachers in schools who mentor preservice teachers;
•Maintain an active research agenda in mathematics education and/or mathematics teacher education and publish and present in scholarly peer-reviewed journals and conferences;
•Seek external funding in support of scholarly activity in mathematics education;
•Advise undergraduate and graduate degree-seeking students;
•Direct doctoral research studies in mathematics education (when appropriate);
•Serve on dissertation committees;
•Participate in program development and accreditation processes;
•Serve on faculty committees at the department, college, and university levels;
•Provide service within the University, to state and local educational agencies, and to relevant professional organizations; and
•Work with local school districts to promote computer science and STEM+C initiatives across K-12 settings.

Required Qualifications:
•Earned doctorate by the start date in Mathematics Education or field related to the teaching and learning of middle and/or high school mathematics;
•At least three years of successful teaching experience in middle and/or high school mathematics classrooms;
•Ability to teach middle and high school mathematics methods courses using Florida Standards for Mathematics, Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMPs), and NCTM’s Mathematics Teaching Practices (MTPs);
•Emerging research agenda in mathematics education and/or mathematics teacher education;
•Ability to support computational thinking and problem solving across STEM+C disciplines and the humanities;
•Commitment to maintaining a culture of Access, Equity, and Inclusion in work with preservice and in-service teachers, colleagues, and other stakeholders;
•Ability to integrate current technologies into face-to-face and on-line instruction;
•Commitment to supervise/observe teacher candidates;
•Commitment to collaborate with mathematics, mathematics education, STEM+C education, and/or other college/university faculty; and
•Ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative.

Departmental Requirements

Preferred Qualifications:
•Established research agenda in mathematics education and/or mathematics teacher education;
•Scholarship connects to computer science, STEM+C, or computational thinking initiatives;
•Experience seeking external funding to support research, service, and/or teacher professional development activities;
•Successful experience supporting teachers to implement computer science, STEM+C, or computational thinking within middle, high school or university classrooms;
•Successful higher education teaching experience;
•Successful experience supervising teacher field experiences and internships;
•Experience developing and teaching graduate courses, both face-to-face and online;
•Familiarity with state-level and CAEP accreditation standards, policies, and procedures;
•Experience building and maintaining relationships for university-school partnerships including conflict and problem resolution; and
•Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency with instructional technologies to support grades 6-12 mathematics instruction and course design at the university level.
