Description of Department: EXCEL: Experiential Courses and Engaged Learning offers a variety of opportunities for students to earn academic credit through hands-on experiences. Internships, co-ops, service learning, and experiential courses provide students the ability to apply knowledge and theories learned in the classroom to "real world" businesses, non-profit organizations, and community agencies. Students are able to develop key competencies, explore career goals, and gain valuable professional connections through local, national, or international positions.

The EXCEL: Experiential Courses and Engaged Learning at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications for a Focus Forward Coordinator (formerly known as Mentor-Scholar Coordinator). This is a full-time temporary 12-month position.

Description of Responsibilities:

With guidance from the Director of EXCEL and in collaboration with the Oswego Middle School and Oswego High School Administration, the Focus Forward Coordinator (formerly known as Mentor-Scholar Coordinator) will work with staff and faculty to coordinate support programming within the Oswego City School District for "at-risk" students to foster improved school connectedness and higher graduation rates. The Coordinator will support SUNY Oswego undergraduates in their role as mentors while creating spaces for student growth in leadership, community engagement, and professionalism. Major responsibilities include facilitating the Focus Forward Program; recruiting participants; designing programs to build students' academic, leadership, and self-management skills; and incorporating opportunities for family involvement. This position will require a timeshare with hours on-site at the Oswego Middle School and Oswego High School while maintaining representation on the SUNY Oswego campus during the Oswego City School District's instructional year.

The Focus Forward Coordinator also:

  • Coordinates, develops, monitors, and acts as site liaison for Focus Forward partnership with the Oswego City School District
  • Recruit program participants, district and undergraduates
  • Maintain presence on site and on campus in order to build supportive relationships with mentees and mentors to encourage participation and commitment to the program.
  • Submit annual assessment report and goals on the effectiveness of the program and student learning outcomes
  • Meet regularly with the student support teams at each of the program sites to discuss individual students and most appropriate interventions.
  • Serve as point person for family communication regarding program applications, policies, and procedures
  • Coordinate with other team members on event planning and facilitation
  • Develop curriculum and teach mentoring and team leader courses
  • Participate in campus committees
  • Grant writing and budget review

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in education or related field at time of appointment
  • Experience in teaching, mentoring or service learning
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Planning, organizing, and multi-tasking skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively interact with a diverse population of students

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years' experience facilitating partnerships within the community
  • Two years' experience in project management or program coordination
  • Proven effectiveness assessing student data and evaluating mentor performance
  • Experience delivering programming to underrepresented minority students, LGBTQ+ students, and other marginalized populations
