The University of North Georgia is currently accepting applications for a Temporary Firearms Lab Instructor.Our firearms training is for Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) Public Safety Academy basic mandate academy students. The University of North Georgia Public Safety Academy is committed to provide according to POST standards the highest quality and comprehensive law enforcement firearms training available. The University of North Georgia Public Safety Academy student receives a broad base of techniques, firearms skills and basic knowledge to develop the student’s skills required to effectively perform his or her role in a law enforcement capacity.

The University of North Georgia Public Safety Academy firearm instructor's job is to teach officers how to safely and effectively respond in a timely manner in the use of their firearms and to survive a lethal confrontation. The Georgia POST firearms instructor must provide and conduct safe, effective, realistic firearms training that also includes classroom instruction and practical exercises on the range. In addition, the University of North Georgia Public Safety Academy will also enhance each student's firearm knowledge and handling skills in the judgmental use of force simulator. The Public Safety Academy firearms mandate instruction consists of 40 hours of instruction on the range and is a five-day program designed to stand alone and may be presented separately or combined to meet the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council state mandates.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

The Firearms Lab Instructor will:

  • Instruct Range Rules and Safety
  • Instuct Use of Force and De-escalation of Force
  • Instruct Live Fire Training
  • Instruct Front Sight/Trigger Pull Training
  • Instruct Malfunction Drill Training
  • Instruct Low Light Training
  • Provide students with academic mentorship in preparation for assessments
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Must have the knowledge, skills and ability to take a student with no knowledge and experience and instruct the student on the operation and maintenance of a semi auto handgun and patrol rifle
  • Ability to teach the student the proper safety and techniques of the operation of each in order to assist the student in attempting to qualify with (2) scores of 80% or better on the GDAC.
  • Ability to observe the student during firearms training and correct any bad techniques if possible with remedial training and practice.
Certifications/Licenses & Minimum Requirements:
  • High School Diploma
  • Minimum of 5 Years of Law Enforcement Experience and 4 years of Firearms Instruction Experience
  • (3 State Certifications Required) Georgia POST General Instructor, Georgia POST Firearms Instructor and Georgia POST Patrol Rifle Instructor.
