ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN THE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS AT THE CITADEL
The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, Department of Physics invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level beginning August 2020. Located in beautiful Charleston, South Carolina, The Citadel is a fully accredited, public, comprehensive, co-educational college with a student body of 2900 undergraduate and 900 graduate and professional students and has been recognized as the #1 public Master’s-level University in the South for the last nine years, 2011-2020, according to US News & World Report. The Citadel supports faculty scholarship through internally-funded research, development, and travel. As a senior military college, The Citadel has a unique military tradition and a mission to educate and train principled leaders. The Department of Physics has 7 tenure-line faculty plus several adjunct faculty and offers the BS in Physics along with minors in aerospace science and applied climatology. Moreover, the College is moving forward with the development of a Center for Climate Studies that will be housed within the Department of Physics, and which promises to expand our offerings in physics and other interdisciplinary programs and research. Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate courses in physics for BS majors and aerospace, meteorological, and climate physics for minors, and college physics or astronomy for general education college requirements. The normal teaching load is 12 contact hours per week with typical class sizes less than 30 students.
Minimum qualifications include an earned doctorate in experimental physics or a closely related field and a commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service. Applicants should be committed to sustaining a robust research program that can engage undergraduate students in experimental and/or applied physics. Candidates with a background in a research area that might support our offerings in aerospace or climate science are desirable, but not required. Candidates should exemplify The Citadel’s core values of honor, duty, and respect. Applicants in ABD (all-but-dissertation) status may be considered at the Assistant Professor level with the expectation that the Ph.D. will be completed by the start of the fall 2020 semester.
