Position Emphasis:The Field Engineer position provides operational support for telephony and data networking services. The position additionally functions as a project resource for the planning and implementation of telephony and data network services at the University of Colorado Denver (UCD). The University is comprised of the Downtown Campus, the Anschutz Medical Campus, and remote locations. The position independently, or as a team member, uses creativity to implement and support telephony and data network solutions to meet current and future business needs relying upon professional discretion and experience. 
The Field Engineer provides services such as data networking and voice provisioning, Moves/Adds/Changes, business requirements gathering, coordination with other team members, development of documentation for new and existing services, diagnosis and resolution of telephony and data service issues, performance of preventive maintenance, and physical deployment of equipment as needed.  This position will be responsible for systems documentation, process documentation, defining and managing preventative maintenance checks and services, cable plant records, and consulting with management on improvement opportunities. 
This position follows all change advisory board processes prior to implementing changes to the telephony and network baseline.  The position will interact with and support vendors that provide services to the university.
The position is required to work closely with external teams such as desktop support, enterprise applications, network security and core networking, among others to execute its duties.
Examples of Work Performed:
  • Perform voice and data network systems operation, maintenance, repairs, troubleshooting for all core and adjunct telephony systems and access layer network components
  • Integrate/interconnect new and existing telephony with adjunct systems
  • Establish and maintain the data network and telephony services, user environment, and quality of service (QoS)
  • Support the designing, building, and commissioning of a reliable, available, and maintainable VoIP and network infrastructure.  
  • Support data networking at layers 1, 2 
  • Understand LAN and WAN environment, including basic Routing and Switching topologies, Wireless (802.1n, a, g, ac), VPNs (IPsec, SSL and others), Ethernet, Carrier Ethernet, Serial (PPP and HDLC) and Frame Relay
  • Perform physical layer cable testing on UTP, FiberOptic, and Coaxial cabling types
  • Perform voice circuit/facility terminations and extensions
  • Sustain and perform strong voice, presence, and network troubleshooting skills
  • Perform network traces and analyze IP packet analysis  
  • Escalate issues to vendors and management 
  • Complete tasks in accordance with accepted project plans 
  • Communicate with other departments to report and resolve software, hardware, and operations problems
  • Support remote offices and remote users
  • Provide end user training on telephony and network related services
  • Maintains circuit documentation
Salary and Benefits:Hiring salary has been established as $55,000.

QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in computer science or a closely related field.
  • 1-2 years of technology experience.
Substitution: A combination of four (4) years of work experience in the occupational field of computer networking and telephony, which provided the same kind, amount and level of knowledge acquired in the required education, may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree. 
  • One (1) year of the substitution years, or post graduate professional experience, must be experience working within an enterprise-class, higher education technology environment.
Conditions of Employment:
  • Most work is performed during normal business hours, however, out of hours work may be expected including late nights, early mornings, or weekends. This position must be flexible in their work hours to meet the needs of the University community. 
  • Must be willing and able to travel between campuses (Denver Campus and Anschutz Medical Campus)
PLEASE NOTE: Candidates will be responsible for travel expenses related to the interview process and any relocation expenses, if applicable.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Cisco certifications – CCNA – Routing and Switching
  • Enterprise Cisco network switching and routing experience
  • Telecom Room closet switching and physical layer build experience 
  • Higher Educational work experience
Competencies:
  • Knowledge of the interaction between on-premises VoIP solutions and Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN).
  • Possess an understanding of Cisco voice and enterprise data networking.
  • Excellent working knowledge with standard LAN/WAN/VoIP concepts and procedures
  • Have strong project management skills.
  • Ability to work closely with other IT staff. 
  • Ability to work flexible hours, as needed.
  • Operational knowledge of NEC telephone systems.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with personnel at all levels within the university, as well as outside vendors/contacts. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with other management staff, employees, and outside contacts. 
  • Ability to prioritize work and handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast paced, diverse, and growth-oriented environment. 
  • The abilities to diagnose problems and independently construct and implement appropriate solutions.
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to going “above and beyond” for customers.
