Description

The Producer is responsible for the successful execution of pre-production planning, budgeting, hiring, contracting, and casting; success is determined as on-time, on or under budget, artistically excellent, and in keeping with the values of the theatre and the University. The Producer develops production plans including budgets, schedules, and advance work with designers, directors, actors, and production staff. They supervise and evaluate contracted artists, production staff, part-time employees, and student employees.


The Producer works closely with Theatreworks’ Artistic Director, Technical Director, Costume Shop Manager, and UCCS Presents Business Operations Manager. High attention to detail, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work independently while managing multiple projects is essential.


Job Description:


Workin Budgeting and Production Project Management:

  • WithArtistic Director, participate in the selection of Theatreworks’ plays andevents, and assemble creative teams.

  • WithArtistic Director, develop, refine and implement the artistic vision and valuesof the company.

  • WithArtistic Director, Technical Director, and Costume Shop Manager, analyzefeasibility of proposed TW season, including materials and labor budgets,staffing needs, and timelines; then refine and enforce timelines, budgets, andvalues to ensure production is delivered: on time, at or under budget, inkeeping with Theatreworks’ high artistic standards, and within a supportive andequitable working environment.

  • Work with UCCS Presents Business OperationsManager, Theatreworks Advisory Board, Development, and others as requested totrack budget and provide budget feedback.

  • Serveas a conduit and advocate between the production contractors and guest artistsand the production and administrative staff to ensure all are able to workwithin the resources available and in keeping with Theatreworks’ vision andvalues.

  • Maintain and refine knowledge-sharing systems such as Microsoft Teams, Dropbox, and others to ensure easy access to all production information.

  • Withthe production stage manager for each show, schedule and facilitate allnecessary production meetings between internal and external parties; collect schedules to determine an overall scope for rehearsals.

  • Collaborate with Marketingto collect information for playbills, social media, and press materialsincluding ensuring materials are in keeping with Union regulations andlicensing requirements.

  • Provideschedules to Events Coordinator to ensure all Theatreworks rehearsals,performances, and events are accurately reflected in University calendars.

  • Collaboratewith Front-of-House Manager, and Assistant Director of Patron Services toensure that front-of-house and box office staff deliver a smooth and enjoyablepatron experience; develop patron experience initiatives as appropriate.

  • Attend rehearsals, technical rehearsals, talkinitiatives, special events, and performances as needed.

  • Scheduleand facilitate post-mortems for each Theatreworks production to assess thesuccesses and lessons learned from all departments (artistic, production,marketing, box office, front-of-house, and revenues, etc.) to ensure institutional learning and growth.

  • Overseehourly employees working on outlined company management projects for artisthosting.

  • Attend Theatreworks andUCCS Presents retreats, and participate in strategic planning activities.

Work in Hiring, Castingand Contracting

  • Staff production contractor positions andhourly and student employees as needed.

  • Managefiles of artist and contractor headshots and resumes.

  • Coordinate and manage all aspects of casting,including annual Equity Principal audition and callbacks in accordance withUnion requirements.

  • Develop and maintain positive relationshipswith local and national casting agencies, artists’ representatives, andtheatrical Unions.

  • Extendoffers of employment and contract all guest artists, production contractors,and student employees within budget and in a timely manner in accordance withUniversity Policy and Union rules.

  • Workclosely with “Producer of Record” and UCCS Presents Business Operations toensure contracts are delivered, information conveyed, reimbursement policiesare clear, and individuals paid accurately and on time.

  • Manageand cultivate relationships with vendors and unions, including licensing housesand Actors’ Equity. 

Workin the Community

  • Serve on university committees as appropriateand able to be balanced with workload.

  • Cultivate connections with students and studentorganizations as an ambassador for Theatreworks.

  • Connect with students and faculty in the Visualand Performing Arts (VAPA) to identify intersections with coursework andpotential hands-on learning opportunities for VAPA students.

  • Representthe company to the Colorado artistic community, the Pikes Peak region, andbeyond.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Competencies:

  • Knowledge:

    • Familiaritywith technical aspects of theatrical productions and theatrical productiontimelines and processes to provide advice to staff directly or to solicitsguidance from experts.

    • Theatrical unioncontracts (including Actors Equity Association, Society of Directors andChoreographers, United Scenic Artists, others as needed).

    • Personnel and fiscal management methods and practices.

  • Skills:

    • Up-to-datecomputer skills and willingness to adopt new technologies, particularlyMicrosoft Teams and Excel, as well as university budgeting software.

    • Must be conscientious, thorough, accurate, andreliable.

This position has beendetermined to be exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair LaborStandards Act (FLSA).

Salary Range:  $48,000 to $53,000

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree or relevant work experience to substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.

  • At least 3 years of experience in professional theatre.

  • At least 3 years of experience developing and managing budgets.

  • At least 3 years of experience hiring, developing and supervising employees.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A degree in stage management, production management, theatre management, arts administration, or a related field.

  • Experienceat a professional arts institution housed within a university.

  • Experienceas a line producer or general manager at a non-profit theatre.

  • Adegree in stage management, production management, theatre. management, artsadministration, or a related field.
