The Mary Fox Whittlesey Visiting Professorship in Studio Arts
The Department of Fine Arts and Art History at the American University of Beirut invites applications for the
2020‐2021 Mary Fox Whittlesey Visiting Professorship in Studio Arts to begin August 15, 2020.
The candidate should be an artist who has demonstrated excellence in contemporary expanded practices in
sculpture, installation art, sound art, trans‐disciplinary media and/or data excavation. They will have an
established record as an active artist, evidenced by engagement in workshops, lectures, residencies,
exhibitions and similar activities. The candidate will also have evidence of scholarly research as well as a
wide network of contacts in their field upon which to draw for the development of the SART BA program in
The artist will be joining a developing Studio Arts Program composed of artists who address topics such as
optics, pixel, image, text and critical visuality with a practice‐based approach. The candidate will contribute
to the department with complementary and new research interests, and develop syllabi related to their area
of expertise to enhance the existing Studio Arts Program.
The Studio Arts BA Program is a sequential curricular structure organized to provide undergraduate art
students with a strong foundation in studio skills and theory. The current faculty members, while trained
and skilled in studio techniques including drawing, painting, sculpture and photography, do not espouse a
conventional approach to the deployment of these techniques nor do they promote in their teaching a
fidelity to any particular tradition in art. Rather, they all teach through the lenses of their own current
practices in which the past, present and future of art are constantly being recomposed in dynamic
constellations. The Program encourages a recalling of art from within current concerns and develops in
students an ability to employ a large array of knowledge and skills with a readiness to open up towards
studio‐based and post‐studio art practices.
We seek to recruit an artist who enthusiastically supports the Program’s strong commitment to the academic
and creative endeavors of all of our students. The aim is to offer students a rich variety of expertise,
perspectives and ways of knowing and learning. The Program is committed to creating a community in which
a diverse population can learn, live and work in an atmosphere of civility and respect for the rights, desires
and sensibilities of each individual.
Two to three years teaching experience at the university level and some administrative experience is
preferred. An MFA or equivalent is a requirement.
The Department of Fine Arts and Art History offers BA degrees in Studio Art and in Art History, An MA in Art
History and curating as well as minor degrees in Theatre and Music. The language of instruction is English.
The successful candidate will:
• Teach a 2:2 load with office hours.
• Teach and develop sophomore, junior and senior courses in the Studio Arts BA program.
• Participate and contribute to the development of a new MFA program in Studio Arts.
• Exhibit their artwork.
• Other related and associated duties.
