Interviews to be held the week of November 18, 2019 Merced College is a midsized community college located in California's Central Valley. Founded in 1962, the college serves more than 16,000 students with room to expand on its 267 acre main campus and 120 acre Los Banos site. The Dean of Student Services position requires a dynamic leader committed to student success. General Description:
Under general direction, the Dean of Student Services has principal administrative responsibility and oversight for various student services, programs, and operations. This position provides supervision and direction to management, classified professionals, and faculty in the area.

The Dean of Student Services has broad scope in the development, interpretation and implementation of major policies and procedures pertaining to the Student Services areas assigned by the District, including the selection and evaluation of faculty, management and classified staff, preparation of faculty assignments, curriculum development, scheduling of classes and program budget development and monitoring. In addition, the Dean is expected to lead counseling faculty, classified professional staff and colleagues toward innovative student success practices and effective student learning outcomes and program review.

The successful candidate is expected to collaborate closely with other deans, management, and academic and student services departments to contribute to the efforts in educating, serving, and retaining students and special population groups identified by the District.

Examples of Duties
Essential Functions:
  • Provide administrative leadership for programs in Student Services
  • Work closely with the Faculty Leads for the Counseling Cohort/Area in administering a comprehensive program of counseling and other student support services
  • Provide leadership in the development and implementation of student support services and programs.
  • Effective delivery of student support programs and services
  • Responsible for effective scheduling practices in assigned areas of responsibility
  • Principles and practices of categorical budget development and administration
  • Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations pertaining to student developmental, curriculum and institutional services
  • Provide leadership, direction and coordination with the Office of Instruction for enrollment development and student retention to assure maximum student access, progress, and success
  • Collaborate with other student services departments, instructional departments, special programs, and career programs to enhance recruitment and retention of under-represented students
  • Collaborate with counseling staff and counselors in identifying gaps in services and develop appropriate strategies to address these gaps
  • Facilitates the coordination of services among student services programs
  • Participate in the planning, coordination and implementation of the Student Equity and Achievement Program initiatives
  • Interpret, implement, and review College/District Board policies in Student Services
  • Participate in educational planning and policy development in conjunction with the other academic and/or student services deans and administrators
  • Initiate goals and objectives consistent with the mission and goals of the District and participate in the planning and program development for assigned programs
  • Participate in the hiring, supervision and evaluation of faculty, management and classified professionals
  • Develop, prepare, and monitor the planning and implementation and evaluation efforts of the programs assigned in the Student Services area
  • Maintain appropriate evaluative methodology, statistical reports, and other records to assess accomplishments and define departmental needs
  • Serves on District standing and ad hoc committees as required
  • Encourage a climate of innovation and continuous program improvement and collaboration
  • Develops and monitors program reviews for departments/programs including student learning and service area outcomes, assessments, and evaluation of data for the purpose of program improvement
  • Works closely with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness in order to assess and evaluate student services programs and services
  • Coordinate and provides leadership to off-campus sites for student support services and programs
  • Recommends to the Vice President, Student Services/Assistant Superintendent the development of policies and procedures needed to successfully implement goals and objectives
  • Serves as the Chief Student Services Officer in the absence of the Vice President of Student Services, as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Vice President, Student Services/Assistant Superintendent

Typical Qualifications
  • Master's degree from an acceptable accredited institution in any discipline.
  • One year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrative assignment
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students
  • Doctorate degree
  • Any additional combination of three or more years of experience in student equity and/or student services program administration or coordination, and/or categorical fund management
  • Experience in counseling and/or student support services program administration or other closely related administrative responsibilities, preferably at the post-secondary level
