Founding Director, Hanson Center for Inclusive STEM Education
Lafayette College seeks nominations and applications for the founding Director of the newly endowed Daniel and Heidi Hanson ’91 Center for Inclusive STEM Education. Inclusive STEM Education & Studies is a strategic priority for the College, and the Director of the Hanson Center for Inclusive STEM Education will be a leader both at Lafayette and beyond.
One of the nation’s most academically competitive and selective residential undergraduate institutions, Lafayette College offers a distinctive combination of programs in both the traditional liberal arts and sciences and engineering. Lafayette is located in Easton, PA, a city in the Lehigh Valley within easy reach of New York City and Philadelphia. The Hanson Center will build on existing strengths and programs (e.g. https://sites.lafayette.edu/inclusive-stem/) by linking efforts in inclusive STEM education and inclusive STEM studies across the College.
The Hanson Center will be a hub to support the recruitment, retention, and thriving of all students through inclusive classrooms, curricula, community, and College culture. The Director of the Hanson Center will develop innovative initiatives and support existing programming to strengthen meaningful participation of underrepresented STEM students, build interdisciplinary faculty community, support related research, and foster communication internally and externally. The Director will work with an active board of faculty and partners. In particular the Director will leverage Lafayette’s unique institutional assets to place the College at the forefront of institutions doing innovative work in inclusive STEM and will:
- Partner with Lafayette’s Center for the Integration of Teaching, Learning and Scholarship to develop and promote best practices for inclusive STEM pedagogies and curriculum development, particularly in relationship to under-represented students;
- Support under-represented students in various forms of engagement, including summer transition and mentoring programs, partnering with Lafayette’s Academic Resource Hub and College Transitions Specialist;
- Lead efforts to coordinate and sustain collaborative, interdisciplinary faculty research in inclusive STEM pedagogy and studies, seeking grants to support both research and institutional transformation efforts;
- Facilitate collaboration for STEM studies (STS) faculty, including on curricular innovation around STEM in the contexts of society, culture, and social justice.
The Director of the Hanson Center for Inclusive STEM Education will be a creative, collaborative academic leader who will work with the College community to advance Lafayette’s leadership in Inclusive STEM Education. Salary will be commensurate with that leader’s qualifications. Review of applications will begin Nov. 1, 2019, and will continue until the position is filled, with an anticipated start date in spring or summer 2020.

- A PhD in a relevant field;
- Experience coordinating programming and facilitating interdisciplinary collaborations, including managing budgets and allocating resources strategically;
- Experience in identifying and pursuing external funding; and
- A demonstrable commitment to and expertise in promoting and sustaining a diverse and truly inclusive community.
