Assistant Researcher - University of California, Berkeley - Department of Physics

The Department of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Researcher to work in the area of particle physics, with an expected start date in Fall 2019. This is a full-time, 100% appointment.

The position will be in the particle physics group in the Physics Department of U.C. Berkeley. The group focuses on searches for Lepton Flavor and Lepton Number violating processes with the Mu2e experiment at Fermilab.

The job duties and responsibilities of this position include research and development of the novel instrumentation for particle physics experiments. In particular, lead the development of the custom firmware for the Mu2e tracker electronics, lead the commissioning of the Mu2e tracker, develop tools to incorporate tracker electronics into the Mu2e simulation framework, and develop the simulation and analysis tools for the muon-to-positron conversion search with Mu2e. Prepare high-profile publications, prepare annual reports to the Department of Energy, and assist in developing funding proposals.

Basic qualifications: (must be met at the time of application):
Ph.D. or equivalent international degree

Additional qualifications: (must be met by the start date of the job):
Five to ten years of work experience.

Preferred qualifications:
Ph.D. in Physics or Nuclear Engineering, with specialization in particle physics, nuclear physics, or instrumentation development. Working knowledge of analysis and simulation tools (ROOT, Geant4), excellence in developing particle physics instrumentation, experience in detector systems, electronics, custom firmware and software, or data acquisition systems for particle physics experiments. Experience in firmware development for MicroSemi FPGAs. Expertise in Python and C++, experience with modern software frameworks. Demonstrated record of preparing scientific or technical publications in peer-reviewed journals.
