Salary:

Anticipated Hiring Salary: $4,160 per month

Note: This position includes full benefits. This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Athletic Corporation employees are at-will.

Overview:

The Assistant Director of Communications serves as a liaison between the Athletics Department, the media, and the campus office of University Communications. This position is responsible for serving as the primary communications oversight for at least three varsity programs, as assigned. The incumbent will be responsible for game day media operations and must work effectively with staff to ensure appropriate media coverage is prepared. The incumbent will serve as a constant point of contact to coaches and student-athletes at all times. This position works with marketing, creative services and other external department staff to deliver a consistent message to all parties and positively promote the Fresno State athletic program.

Position Summary:

  • Responsible for game day media operations, the preparation of game notes, and maintenance of statistical information
  • Responsible for writing and editing press releases, writing and editing records books, maintaining content on GoBulldogs.com , producing game programs and other materials to help promote the teams and student-athletes
  • Supervise interns and 3-6 students during events/game days
  • Coordinates the preparation of award nominations
  • Facilitates interviews and initiates media coverage by preparing logistics and story ideas
  • Responsible for managing the assigned sport team's social media accounts
  • Work closely with producers and broadcasters on telecasts of Fresno State events
  • Serve as constant point of contact to coaches and others with regards to communications
  • Other duties as assigned

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office and Adobe InDesign
  • Strong knowledge of social media platforms (Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, )
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of terminology and statistics used in intercollegiate sports
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to:
    o Exercise independent judgment and discretion on a daily basis
    o Write effectively (AP Style) and produce game notes, previews, game recaps and special features
    o Strictly adhere to NCAA, Mountain West Conference and University rules and regulations
    o Work in a flexible, collaborative manner in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions while under pressure of meeting deadlines; travel with teams as needed
    o Perform job assignments by working extended 8-hour workdays and weekends, which can also include holidays
    o Apply effective listening, writing and oral skills and competence in interpreting and communicating procedures, policies, information, ideas and instruction
    o Support the department's commitment to equity and diversity, as well as perform all duties with integrity and professionalism
    o Establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, and the general public from diverse ethnic, cultural, and social-economic backgrounds
  • Commitment to academic integrity and compliance with University, conference and NCAA regulations
  • A history of regular attendance and positive performance evaluations

    Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field
  • Previous experience working in a Division I sports information office as a full-time staff member with direct sport responsibilities

    Preferred Skills:

  • Prior Division I experience serving as the primary contact for at least three varsity teams during an academic year
  • Knowledge of statcrew sports statistics software
  • Maintain basic knowledge of all sports
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with all members of the external staff regarding needs for teams, coaches and student-athletes
  • Ability to create graphics using Adobe Photoshop
  • Ability to create publications using Adobe InDesign
