Job Purpose
The Fisher College of Science and Mathematics at Towson University is accepting applications for a Research Support Specialist to service the research and educational needs of the college. As research support specialist, duties include maintaining research instrumentation, supervising data collection and instrumentation use with faculty and students, and developing analytical techniques and protocols. The position also requires expertise in maintaining/operating a professional machine shop for fabrication of research and educational devices.
Description
This position provides support for the research and education activities in the Fisher College of Science and Mathematics through instrument support and machine shop responsibilities. Research support includes routine maintenance, schedule management, operation, training, and development of new analytical techniques on research and educational scientific instrumentation. The position also involves the maintenance, operation, and training of instrumentation in the college machine shop. Responsibilities also include procurement of materials and tools and maintaining an accurate inventory of all machine shop items.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree.The ideal candidate should have experience with research grade scientific instrumentation (such as electron microscopy, diffractometers, etc.) and metal fabrication (lathe, milling machine, etc.). Experience with CAD and rapid prototyping techniques such as 3D printing and CNC manufacturing is also favorable. Successful candidates should have excellent management skills, ability to multitask and handle scheduling effectively, work independently or in groups. Candidates should be motivated, patient, able to train and supervise users which could include undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty.
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
A Criminal Background Investigation is required for the hired candidate and the results may impact employment.
