Position Title:  Assistant Professor – Communication Studies

Summary: The School of Communications at Grand Valley State University is seeking an effective teacher and scholar to join the faculty of the Communication Studies major. This is an Assistant Professor tenure-track position to begin Fall 2020. All areas of research and scholarship are welcome. The Communication Studies major places a premium on the abilities and skills of the applicant to successfully contribute to and complement the strong teaching of the current faculty within a range of communication courses.

Required Qualifications and Education:

·         A doctorate in the field of Communication is required (PhD is expected at the time of appointment).

·         Evidence of teaching effectiveness and scholarly/professional engagement is required.

Preferred Qualifications and Education:

·         A record of involvement and achievement in scholarly/professional communication associations is preferred. 

Responsibilities – Essential Functions:

·         Teach courses across the undergraduate communication curriculum including: Concepts of Communication, Foundations of Communication Research, Storymaking, Argument and Analysis, Debate, Intercultural Communication, Speech, Critical Interpretation, among others, and within area(s) of specialty.

·         Duties include attending School of Communications faculty meetings, advising students, and service to the institution, to the profession, and to the community.

·         Typical teaching load is nine credit hours (usually three courses) per semester. 

Responsibilities – Non-Essential Functions:

·         Ability to teach a range of research methods as well as design, develop, and teach hybrid and online courses a plus. 

Salary:  Commensurate with experience.

Department/Division:  Communication Studies is located in the School of Communications, which is a part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The School offers the majors of Advertising/Public Relations, Communication Studies, Health Communication, and Multimedia Journalism. The School also offers a Masters in Communication. Campus: The School of Communications and faculty offices are located at the main GVSU campus in Allendale; courses may be taught at Allendale and/or the Pew Campus in Grand Rapids.
