Faculty Positions at Department of Communications and New Media, National University of Singapore

The National University of Singapore (NUS) is a leading research-intensive university (http://nus.edu.sg/) that is consistently ranked among the world’s top universities. Established in 2004, the Department of Communications and New Media (http://www.fas.nus.edu.sg/cnm/) is a leader in communication and new media research and education. It offers undergraduate, honours and PhD programmes in communications and new media studies, with an innovative curriculum that introduces students to key debates in the areas of media studies, communication management, interactive media design and cultural studies. Its curriculum provides students with practical skills in social media management, user interface design, and digital marketing. Its students undertake industry immersion through its compulsory internship programme.

The Department also offers an undergraduate double degree with the School of Business; undergraduate minors in Interactive Media Development and Cultural Studies, and the Cultural Studies in Asia PhD programme. It has research concentrations in media psychology, health communication and cultural studies. Successful candidates for these positions will join an engaging community of 32 full-time faculty, 12 part-time instructors, and 760 undergraduate and graduate students. The Department of Communications and New Media at National University of Singapore (NUS) invites applicants for the following positions to begin full-time in 2020.

A. TENURE TRACK POSITIONS (CLOSING DATE: 2 DECEMBER 2019)

(1) Assistant Professor in Data Analytics

We seek applicants with expertise in the following areas: computational methods in communication and social sciences, including data analysis, machine learning, and visualisation. Practical experience with modern analysis and learning platforms is necessary.

Qualifications: PhD in Communication or closely related discipline, with a specialization in computing by date of appointment; evidence of excellence in teaching.

(2) Assistant Professor in Digital Media We seek applicants in the area of digital media. We broadly define digital media and are looking for a scholar who examines emerging communication technologies using conventional and cutting edge social science approaches and research methods. The successful candidate will have expertise in one or more of the following areas, including but not limited to: computer-mediated communication, social psychology of new media, strategic use of digital media, digital media effects, and social and cultural impacts of digital media.

Qualifications: PhD in Media and Communication, or closely related discipline by date of appointment; evidence of excellence in teaching and research. Consideration may also be given to candidates with practice-based and industry experience in related sectors.

(3) Assistant Professor in Media Law and Policy We seek applicants with expertise in one or more of the following areas: Media law & policy; Media ethics; Intellectual property; Internet governance; global media policy; Tech law & policy; regulations of emerging technologies such as AI, blockchain, and Internet of Things.

Qualifications: PhD in Media and Communications Studies, LLD with specialisation in information technology and media, or closely related discipline by date of appointment; evidence of excellence in teaching. Consideration may also be given to candidates with practice-based and industry experience in related sectors.

(4) Assistant Professor in Computational Communication We seek applicants with expertise in one or more of the following areas: computational social science; data science; social algorithms and artificial intelligence; web science research methods; interactive digital art and immersive media; machine learning and text analytics; computational art and curation; human interface/user experience (UX) design.

Qualifications: PhD in Media and Communications Studies, Computational Communication, Design Informatics, or closely related discipline by date of appointment; evidence of excellence in teaching. Consideration may also be given to candidates with practice-based and industry experience in related sectors.

(5) Assistant Professor in Open Specialisation We seek applicants with open specialisation in the general discipline of New Media and Communication.

Qualifications: Successful candidates must have a PhD in Cultural Studies, Media and Communications Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, Computational Communication, Design Informatics, or closely related discipline by date of appointment; evidence of excellence in teaching. Consideration may also be given to candidates with practice-based and industry experience in related sectors.

Professional development: Successful talented early career candidates with excellent research track records will be considered for the National University of Singapore Presidential Young Professorship (NUS PYP) scheme which includes a start-up research grant up to SGD 750,000 including scholarships to hire PhD students, and an award of SGD 250,000 for discretionary spending.

Responsibilities: Successful candidates are expected to teach 120 hours per academic year. Other duties include supervision of honours students and graduate students, and administrative service. The anticipated start date is 1 July 2020 prior to the beginning of the semester in August 2020.

 

B. EDUCATOR TRACK

(1) Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Cultural Studies (with specialisation in Cultural Management) (Closing date: 2 December 2019)

Candidates will have global, regional and local knowledge of arts, cultural and media industries with expertise in one or more of the following areas: cultural management; cultural policy and practice; critical creative industry studies; cultural planning and audience development; arts, community and diversity; cultural economics; arts management and data analytics; cultural diplomacy; art history and curatorial practice. Candidates will have demonstrated knowledge of industry trends and engagement in industry practice.

Qualifications: Successful candidates must have a PhD in cultural studies and/or related fields. Other duties include supervision of honours students and graduate students, and administrative service.

Responsibilities: Successful candidates are expected to teach 240 hours per academic year. Other duties include supervision of honours students and graduate students, and administrative service. The anticipated start date is 1 July 2020 prior to the beginning of the semester in August 2020.

(2) Teaching Assistant in Digital Media and Analytics (Closing Date: 31 October 2019) We seek applicants with teaching assistant expertise and experience interactive digital art and immersive media; machine learning and text analytics; computational art and curation; human interface/user experience (UX) design, etc. The applicant will have industry related and/or teaching experience in one or more of the areas.

Qualifications: Successful candidates must have a good Honours degree in communications or a closely affiliated discipline by the appointment of start date and a record of excellence in teaching in large comprehensive universities. A passion for working closely with students and a commitment to student learning are essential. Successful candidates are also expected to have experience with online teaching and the development of MOOCs.

C. POSTDOCTORAL TEACHING FELLOWS (2 POSITIONS) (Closing Date: 31 October 2019)

Candidates will have expertise in one or more of the following areas: new media and mobility; cultural studies in Asia; cultural theory and materialist cultural studies; critical software studies and network theory; games and e-sports theory; race, gender and sexuality studies in Asia; critical creative industry and policy studies; Asian film and digital heritage studies; digital ethnography and qualitative research methods.

Responsibilities: Successful candidates are expected to teach 2 modules per year (50%); advance their research by publishing top-tier journal articles and/or turning their thesis into a monograph; developing their new postdoctoral project, and; contribute to curriculum development in cultural and media studies. This is a full-time position for 2 years. The anticipated start date is 1 January 2020 prior to the beginning of the semester in January 2020.

Qualifications: PhD in Cultural Studies, Media and Communications Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, or closely related discipline by date of appointment; evidence of successful teaching.
