Assistant or Associate Professor, Tenure Track, in Mechanical Engineering

Location:
Seattle, WA
Open Date:
Sep 19, 2019
Description:

The Mechanical Engineering Department in the College of Engineering at the University of Washington, Seattle, invites outstanding faculty candidates to apply a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the assistant or the associate professor level, commensurate with experience and/or qualifications. This position is on a 9 month service period with an anticipated start date of September 16, 2020. University of Washington faculty are committed to excellent teaching, outstanding research, and exemplary service. The Mechanical Engineering department’s research and teaching portfolio covers all aspects of the broad field of mechanical engineering, including interdisciplinary work in engineering in medicine, robotics and controls, materials, advanced manufacturing, and alternative energy. The department currently has 38 full-time faculty, 418 undergraduates, 262 masters students, 115 PhD students and 12 postdoctoral researchers and continues to grow. More information about the ME department is available at http://www.me.washington.edu.

Candidates with a strong background in all areas of composite structures and materials, with a focus on manufacturing, are particularly encouraged to apply. The Department seeks to build on its existing strengths in modeling, design, manufacturing, controls and robotics, damage mechanics, automated flaw detection and characterization, and computation and data science. The individual’s potential to conduct world-class research and to innovate in the fundamental understanding of composite materials is, however, more important than the specific area of specialization. The department has two centers with a strong focus on composites: the FAA funded center on Advanced Materials in Transport Aircraft Structures; and the Boeing Advanced Research Center. The ability to leverage the ME Department’s and the University’s competitive advantage in advanced manufacturing, lightweight structures, and data science as applied to the aerospace, transportation, and alternative energy sectors and to help launch multidisciplinary research efforts will be an important consideration in the search committee’s evaluation of applicants. Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to an innovative undergraduate curriculum, and develop graduate courses in their areas of expertise.

The University of Washington and the College of Engineering promote diversity and inclusivity among our students, faculty, staff, and public. Thus, we seek candidates whose research, teaching, and/or service have prepared them to fulfill our commitment to inclusion and have given them the confidence to fully engage audiences in higher education from a wide spectrum of backgrounds. All UW faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. These positions are contingent on budgetary approval.

The university is the recipient of a National Science Foundation ADVANCE Institutional Transformation Award to increase the participation of women in academic science and engineering careers. The university is also the recipient of the 2006 Alfred P. Sloan award for Faculty Career Flexibility and is committed to supporting the work-life balance of its faculty. Additional questions may be addressed to MEChair@uw.edu.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have a PhD (or foreign equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline by the date of appointment. The successful applicant will be expected to provide innovative, high-quality teaching; to develop a vigorous, externally-funded research program; and to contribute to the goals and missions of the department, college, and university.

Application Instructions:

Applications should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statements of research plans and educational experience and philosophy, names and contact information for at least three references, and copies of your three most significant publications. In accord with the University's expressed commitment to excellence and equity, contributions in scholarship and research, teaching and service that address diversity and equal opportunity should be included among the professional and scholarly statements.

Review of applications begins immediately and priority will be given to applications received by December 15, 2019. The process remains open until the position is filled.
