Founded in 1916, Sacramento City College (SCC) is a multi-campus, urban college that consists of a 70-acre main campus across from William Land Park. The college has two educational centers, one in Davis on the campus of the University of California, Davis, and one in West Sacramento located adjacent to the public library, community center and civic center. SCC is a vibrant teaching and learning institution with approximately 20,000 day and evening students and is recognized as both a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI).

Sacramento City College has a rich history in the community and has expanded educational opportunities to students across the region. SCC awards Associate in Arts or Science degrees as well as Associate Degrees for Transfer, which guarantee transfer into the California State University system. The college offers Career Education certificates and degrees, transfer credit for students who desire to continue their education at a four-year college or university, and instruction in basic skills such as English, English as a second language, and mathematics.

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the College President, the Dean of Planning, Research, and Institutional Effectiveness is responsible for leading college efforts in relation to comprehensive institutional research and an evidence-based planning system. The Dean serves as the college’s accreditation liaison officer (ALO) and assists the college community in institutional effectiveness.

Assignment Responsibilities

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

Institutional Research and Planning:
• Assuring the planning, organization, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive and integrated institutional research program and evidence-based planning process that leads to college dialogue about effectiveness and continuous improvement.
• Conducting ongoing analysis of the college’s performance with respect to student outcomes and student learning, with a focus on the impact of culturally relevant pedagogy on student learning.
• Coordinating the collection and analysis of data from students, faculty, staff, community and industry partners to identify strengths and weaknesses in current college practices, structures, and services that directly impact student success.
• Evaluating the impact of student success initiatives.
• Defining key data terms and creating a common understanding of data analysis throughout the institution.
• Engaging the wider college community in conversations about data to increase user understanding of data and to gain a better understanding of the context of the data.
• Preparing institutional effectiveness reports for the college and helping college community understand how to utilize the data in such reports.
• Leading college in understanding and implementing planning system and resource allocation at all levels.

• Serving as college’s accreditation liaison officer (ALO), facilitating college through all aspects of the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) accreditation process.
• Staying up to date on ACCJC standards and processes and informing college community of changes.
• Preparing and submitting all required reports to ACCJC.

Research Office:
• Leading the Planning, Research, and Institutional Effectiveness (PRIE) office in providing grant development and grant-writing support for the college.
• Leading local research review processes for internal or external individuals who wish to conduct research at the college.
• Supporting the college in understanding and adhering to participatory governance processes and in encouraging best practices.
• Supervising PRIE staff so that their work is fully integrated into the work of the college.
• Planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating PRIE staff.
• Assisting college president in planning and leading the work of the College Council.
• Actively seeking connection with various constituencies at the college to determine research and data needs.
• Performing other duties as assigned.

The administrative assignment may include day, evening, weekend, and/or off-campus work and/or hours.

1. Have a master’s degree* from an accredited institution completed by January 1, 2020.

2. Have one year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrator’s administrative assignment.

3. Have an equity-minded focus, responsiveness, and sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles, and successfully foster and support an inclusive educational and employment environment.
