Agriculture in today’s world is a business, whether it be processing and marketing agricultural products, farming, or supplying agricultural inputs. Consumers face a variety of choices that are impacted by policies and regulations, by micro and macro conditions affecting them, and by their individual circumstances and welfare. The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ARE) addresses important issues regarding the management of agricultural and related businesses, the functioning of agricultural markets, the protection and use of resources, the performance of government policies affecting agricultural and related industries, and the impacts of decisions made by consumers with respect to the purchase of food and fiber products.

ARE offers undergraduate major and minor programs in agricultural business management and a concentration in biological sciences business management within the agricultural business management program. At the graduate level, the department offers a Master of Science degree in agricultural economics, and Ph.D. degree in economics. These instructional programs are enriched by faculty members with extension and research activities which contribute to the relevance and thoroughness of the teaching program.

Essential Job Duties

The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at NC State University seeks applicants for an Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist of Microeconomics position with a focal area in labor economics. This is a 9-month faculty appointment split 80% Extension and 20% Research.

We seek an individual to develop an outstanding extension and research program related to the economics of labor with an emphasis on agricultural labor. Potential extension and research areas may include, but are not limited to, wages, immigration regulations, labor supply, labor demand, labor mobility, compliance with labor market regulations (e.g., minimum wage legislation, occupational health and safety standards, E-verify), and establishing best practices to training, managing, and retaining agricultural labor. This new faculty member will be a labor economist who is expected to develop a nationally and internationally recognized extension and research program to inform lawmakers, policymakers, farmers, and the industry on agricultural labor issues in order to maintain the vitality of the agricultural economy. The successful candidate should demonstrate strong interests in Extension education and must possess excellent quantitative skills. Priority consideration will be given to candidates that demonstrate a capacity for interdisciplinary collaborations.

The successful candidate for this Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist position will develop a strong Extension program with agricultural labor crop stakeholders in N.C.; develop an outstanding record of scholarly research in academic journals, which will also include participation in interdisciplinary research and in extramurally funded research projects; and mentor graduate students. An outstanding applied research program that supports a robust Extension effort for stakeholders is expected.
