DepartmentThe Gunning Group at the University of Toronto (Mississauga) is a translational research group specializing in small molecule drug discovery. Our interdisciplinary team of ~40-members in collaboration with top world-wide institutions, investigators, and industry, is leading multiple innovative drug discovery programs aimed at the development of improved therapies for most aggressive cancers. Our internal integrated R&D activities have expanded beyond medicinal chemistry and today include in vitro biology, biochemistry, molecular and cell biologists and in vivo biology. Our group is seeking an energetic, results-oriented drug discovery professional with a proven track record of accomplishments in the research field to join our dynamic team and lead collaborative projects.
The successful candidate is expected to have extensive experience in modern small molecule drug discovery, strong skills in project management, ability to analyze complex data sets, demonstrate sound decision-making and analytical skills and able to provide creative proposals and solutions to advance ongoing projects. The candidate will be expected to work on a range of projects with a team of ~40 researchers at undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral, and research associate levels, to advance the research programs. 
The key responsibilities of the successful candidates include the following:
  • Directly supervise students, postdoctoral fellows and research associates
  • Work with students/post-docs to prepare scientific manuscripts, grant applications, drafts of patent applications
  • Conduct due diligence on the R&D data and ensure/oversee all data generated in the group is properly recorded/lab note-books are maintained.
  • Conduct regular meetings with group members.
  • Organize and carry out laboratory purchases, and troubleshoot equipment usage/experiment set-up.
  • Prepare research progress reports on the projects in a timely manner.
  • Manage external relations including collaborations and work with CROs.
  • Assist in the financial reporting to granting agencies and internal to U of T.


CampusEducation:
PhD in Organic, Biological, Medicinal Chemistry or relevant discipline.

Experience:
At least ten (10) years academic/industry experience.

Other:
  • Comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of modern drug discovery
  • Demonstrated laboratory proficiency
  • Experience in grant writing
  • Excellence in project management and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience with the operation of standard laboratory instrumentation and data analysis
  • Able to work within a team structure and effectively communicate with colleagues at all levels
  • Proven research track record as evidenced by a strong publication and/or patent record
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and constantly seeking creative solutions to challenging problems. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
