General Description / Primary Purpose

The Assistant Athletics Director of Academic Support Services, typically under the direction of the Senior Associate Athletics Director or above, designs, develops, implements and interprets departmental processes and programs. The Senior Associate Athletics Director may provide leadership and guidance for a university department.

Essential Duties

Job Function

Responsible for the overall direction, management and supervision of the Athletics Academic Services unit including the allocated budget and the full and part-time employees, interns, and student assistants. Ensures that the Academic Services’ primary responsibility is to serve the academic needs for the approximately 300 student-athletes. Ensures compliance with NCAA, Conference and Institutional policies and regulations. Directs a full range of academic support programs for student-athletes including, but not limited to, enrollment, registration, academic eligibility assistance, NCAA eligibility oversight, academic advisement and counseling, degree progress monitoring, tutoring, study hall, mid-term and mid-year academic reviews, graduation and post-eligibility monitoring. Serves as liaison to several University departments, including the Office of Admissions, Academic Advising, and the Office of the Registrar. Responsible for the coordination of all reviews for prospective student-athletes. Consults with student-athletes on academic, athletic, social, and personal issues. Coordinate individual academic assessment and provide customized assistance as needed. Prepare and provide academic data and reports for all coaches and administrative staff. Provide appropriate NCAA rules and education and training for college academic advisers, department staff and student-athletes. Work closely with coaches on all student-athlete’s academic matters. Review and make recommendations for admissions in conjunction with the Athletic Director to the Director of Admissions. Serves on the Athletic Certification Committee. Member of the Athletics Department senior staff assisting in the development and implementation of strategies and objectives to ensure departmental goals are met. The position will accept additional duties and special projects as assigned by the Athletic Director and/or his designee.

Marginal Functions

Assist with evaluation of prospective student-athletes transcripts; provide recruiting assistance and meet with prospects during recruitment; coordinate with upper division advisors regarding programs of study; assist with new student-athletes orientation; liaison with campus academic support units; Direct and supervise NCAA Champs life skills program. Supervises Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Required Qualifications

A Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in a directly related area of specialization and two years of experience directly related to the job functions; or a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in a directly related area of specialization and four years of experience directly related to the job functions.

Faculty Position Required QualificationsDepartmental Requirements

Preference shown to applicants who meet the required qualification and also possess the following:
A minimum of four (4) years of Athletic Academic Services experience including the supervision of support staff is preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with prior academic service work experience at the Division I level. Candidate must possess an understanding of NCAA and Conference rules, strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work in a dynamic, diverse work environment. Other qualifications include the ability to work cooperatively with diverse groups and administrators, faculty, staff and students. Prefer working knowledge of NCAA Compliance Assistant Internet, INB System, and other computer software programs. The successful applicant must be able to develop and implement innovative approaches and solutions; work well independently and in teams; and be flexible in accepting new responsibilities.

The holder of this position is responsible for any NCAA and Atlantic Sun Conference bylaws and guidelines that a member of the UNF Athletic Compliance Department provides in addition to all UNF regulations. The individual must also assure that NCAA, Conference and UNF regulations are followed to the best of their knowledge and any violations thereof are reported to UNF Athletic Compliance.

Campus Security Authority (CSA) This position has been designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). This position has been designated as a CSA because it involves significant responsibility for student and campus activities and/or responsibility for campus security. As such, any person in this position must report to the University Police Department a crime or an incident that might be a crime that he/she becomes aware of. This position has a reporting requirement because the University believes that your responsibility for students, campus activities and/or campus security will make you someone members of the University community will see as an authority figure and someone to whom they can seek help. A CSA is not expected to investigate or determine whether a criminal incident actually took place. A CSAs responsibility is a duty to report. All positions designated as CSAs are required to complete an online or in-person training session. The holder of this position is designated as a “Responsible Employee” pursuant to their role under Title IX. Therefore, the incumbent must promptly report allegations of sexual
