Athletics fundraising at William & Mary is responsible for the leadership & strategy of private philanthropy to benefit athletics programming at William & Mary. The athletics fundraising team is seated in two offices, University Advancement and William & Mary Athletics. The Assistant Athletic Director for Major Gifts / Director of Athletics Advancement reports to the Executive Director of Athletics Advancement/Senior Associate Athletics Director for Advancement and acts in their place when needed, working to build a high-level fundraising program that generates significant revenue for William & Mary’s priorities for athletics programming.
The Assistant Athletic Director for Major Gifts / Director of Athletics Advancement is responsible for soliciting and securing major gifts in the six and seven figure range and assisting with the implementation of strategic procedures and best practices for the athletics development unit in its entirety to include face-to-face cultivation, solicitations, priority point allocations, annual giving, prospect management, events, hospitality, volunteer management, project support and stewardship. The Assistant Athletic Director for Major Gifts / Director of Athletics Advancement will identify, cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of approximately 75 – 100 major gift prospects with the capacity to make gifts/pledges in excess of $25,000 and will have oversight of estate and endowment gifts.

•Bachelor’s degree with substantive experience or specialized expertise directly related to the position.
•Experience in fundraising with the demonstrated ability to identify, qualify and cultivate prospective donors or clients or equivalent relationship management experience from client-serving or revenue-generating roles in other industries.
•Understanding of volunteer management and its role in fundraising.
•Demonstrated ability to reach aggressive goals with the demonstrated ability to solicit and secure private gifts.
•Experience reaching aggressive goals.
•Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness, including but not limited to programming and staffing.
•Advanced Degree (preferably a Master’s degree) in Sports Management, Business or other related field
•Experience in collegiate athletics fundraising, specifically in estate and endowment gifts
•Experience drafting and executing creative donor and prospect strategies.
•Experience with volunteer board management.
•Experience exceeding goals in a metrics-driven organization.
