The UC Berkeley School of Public Health was founded in 1943; during 2018 we celebrated our 75th anniversary. We are fueled by a deep commitment to social and environmental justice, scientific inquiry and discovery, and community-engaged public health action. As a senior-level administrator reporting to the Dean, the Assistant Dean for Students, in partnership with a team of dedicated student-facing professionals, is accountable for a wide range of student services duties and responsibilities, including recruitment, admissions, financial aid (e.g., awarding of fellowships, block grant funds), student orientation and annual events, undergraduate and graduate advising, and related programs. The Assistant Dean, serving as a conduit for student-facing staff, provides strategic leadership and works closely with the Dean, Executive Associate Dean, Chief of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion, student advisors, faculty leadership, the Graduate Division and others to develop, implement, and assess programs and initiatives that continuously innovate and improve upon the student experience. The Assistant Dean is expected to lead with a commitment and advocacy lens to ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion are embedded in all aspects of student services leadership, which includes students, faculty, and staff.
Student Affairs Leadership: Ensures compliance with all relevant guidelines and regulations; stays abreast of best practices and new developments in student advising. Programmatic responsibility for the development and implementation of new procedures, and advisement to School leadership regarding changes to existing policies related to student services. Analyzes and evaluates the impact of policy changes for students and recommends future policies based on the dynamics of campus operational changes.
Reviews and approves exceptions as delegated by the Executive Associate Dean/Head Graduate Advisor (HGA) to policies and regulations or serves as proxy for HGA in requesting and negotiating exceptions to policy from Graduate Division and other campus bodies. Guides the review and decision-making process of student petitions, requests, and appeals. In concert with the Executive Associate Dean, adjudicates decisions on exception to policy in relation to sensitive student situations that involve highly complex problems. Works collaboratively with the Dean, Executive Associate Dean, Assistant Deans, and Chief of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) on specific issues or cases pertaining to students or the services provided to them. Works collaboratively with Chief of DEI to ensure equitable practices are incorporated into all aspects of student services and partners closely with the DREAM Office and the Center for Public Health Practice & Leadership to reach School DEI goals.
Represents Student Affairs, both students and staff, on several key School councils/committees (e.g., Committee on Student Affairs, Undergraduate Management Council, Educational Policy & Curriculum Committee, Faculty Advisory Council, etc.); invites other student-facing staff to key meetings to add perspective, when beneficial. Participates in external accreditation and internal program review processes, submissions, and follow-up actions. Provides leadership to all student-facing staff, regardless of formal reporting authority, and partners closely with staff managers in divisions/programs to ensure collective success.
Recruitment, Admissions, and Financial Aid:
Manages and supports the Associate Director of Recruitment & Admissions, and provides mentorship to recruitment & admissions staff. Plans, develops, organizes, and directs strategies for recruiting and admitting students, with a focus on the recruitment and retention of students from underrepresented backgrounds, in conjunction with the Diversity Respect Action Equity Multiculturalism (DREAM) Office. Works closely with the Associate Director, DREAM Office, Committee on Student Affairs, faculty leadership, student advisors, and others to achieve student equity and diversity via recruitment strategies, holistic admissions policies, and yield goals. Represents the School at select high-profile local and national recruitment/outreach events. Conducts data analyses to evaluate the effectiveness of recruitment and/or admissions programs, tracks progress, identifies trends, and makes recommendations for strategy improvements to enhance high quality applications and yield. Oversees and streamlines the design, planning, and implementation of the application review and admissions process, including the use of both the centralized application system, SOPHAS, and the university-level application system, Slate. Reviews difficult and complex admissions cases, and strategizes with Graduate Student Affairs Officers to write successful exception memorandums as needed.
Responsible for administering approximately $2.5 million in fellowships, donor awards, and federal grants available as student financial aid. Collaborates with the Chief Financial Officer, Associate Director of Recruiting & Admissions, Committee on Student Affairs, and others to establish financial aid/student funding strategy and goals; effectively manages allocations to achieve goals; measures outcomes and proposes strategy amendments as needed. Advises and instructs faculty committees on ranking and selection of fellowships candidates, utilizing a strong understanding of financial need, barriers, and opportunities. Ensures award decisions are communicated and processed in a timely manner by team members.
Undergraduate Student Advising and Program:
Oversees academic progress for undergraduate Public Health majors, and the quality of the advising services and events available to them. Holds a key role in the review committee for undergraduate student applicants. Ensures undergraduate student advisors (who are direct reports) are fully trained and well supported relative to the Student Information Systems (i.e., CalCentral), UC and L&S Division of Undergraduate Studies policies and procedures, pre-health and pre-med news/updates/advising, student advising skills and competencies (e.g., conceptual, informational, relational, technological, personal), etc. Meets with the advisors regularly to ensure ongoing communication. Provides direction and advisement to undergraduate student advisors on complex issues encountered; leads resolution/response to student emergencies. Partners with Undergraduate Program Faculty Director and advisors on direction of the Program. Ensures ongoing compliance with all academic policies governing undergraduates within the School; creates and implements operational processes and procedures (e.g., elective petitioning, application review) to conform to established policies.
Graduate Student Advising:
Ensures Graduate Student Affairs Officers (GSAOs, who report to their respective academic divisions/programs) are fully trained and well supported relative to the Student Information Systems (i.e., CalCentral), Graduate Division policies and procedures, and student advising skills and competencies (e.g., conceptual, informational, relational, technological, personal). Provides direction and advisement to graduate student advisors on complex issues encountered. Participates in the recruitment and selection of graduate student advisors; contributes ongoing performance feedback to divisional leadership. Contributes to workload assessments, and prioritization/balancing efforts. Partners with divisional leadership to solve medium-term staffing gaps (e.g., 2+ weeks, due to leaves, turnover, etc.); utilizes systems/procedures/advising knowledge to provide back-up in select circumstances.
Makes decisions on hiring decisions, performance, salary actions, and other human resources related issues of managed staff and student employees. Ensures team members are fully trained and have the tools and access they need to perform successfully in their roles. Conducts workload assessments and leads prioritization/balancing efforts. Actively engages in and supports the professional and career development of direct reports and their team members; promotes and supports flexible work arrangements, within the parameters of business need. Projects staffing needs relative to programmatic growth, and partners with appropriate members of leadership to ensure staffing capacity. Effectively develops, leads, and manages teams, utilizing sound conflict management skills. Effectively interacts with student services staff, harnessing strong team-building skills as a means to build staff morale.
Manages the planning and execution of large, annual student-centric events: Spring Visit Day, New Student Orientation (both Graduate NSO and Undergraduate NSO), and Commencement.
Plans, develops, and administers the student services budget for the organization. Determines best allocation of financial, time, and human resources in planning recruitment/outreach travel and events, large events (e.g., Commencement), student activities, staff development, and other initiatives. Provides input on budget allocation decisions about financial aid/fellowships and student programming in partnership with other members of the Leadership Team (e.g., Exec. Assoc. Dean, CFO, Chief of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion). Approves expenditures for various events, programs, projects, and initiatives throughout the year.
Represents the School to the campus community and relevant external constituencies (e.g., corporate partners, alumni, sponsoring agencies, governmental entities), including other schools of public health and the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH), in the area of student services. Represents School policies and interests in campus-wide committee meetings and task forces.
Learning & Development:
Participates in workshops, trainings, and other professional development opportunities.
5+ years of work/leadership experience in the student services field in a higher education setting (e.g., recruiting, admissions, funding, student advising, etc.). Highly developed professional commitment to creating a student services culture where all student-facing staff thrive and are able to contribute to an outstanding and inclusive student experience.
Demonstrated experience advocating for diverse students, in all dimensions, including advanced understanding of issues of disparities in educational background, class, race, gender, ability, age, sexuality, and immigration status, especially as they pertain to graduate study. Demonstrated experience in recruiting, advising, and/or counseling historically underrepresented students as well as students from a diverse array of backgrounds and experiences.
Advanced knowledge of student advising and counseling competencies and techniques.
Ability to integrate core concepts of equity, inclusion, and educational justice into everyday practice.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, specifically as it relates to communicating to a variety of internal and external stakeholders; comfort presenting to large audiences; strong data presentation skills.
Ability to build cohesive teams through excellent management of direct reports and to achieve goals through subordinate supervisors, as well as experience with leading cross-functional teams that do not have a direct, formal reporting relationship.
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization at all levels; high degree of emotional intelligence; demonstrated ability to work effectively with and build consensus among diverse, multicultural populations including undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff; demonstrated expertise building collaborations.
Track-record of strategic planning, change management, project management (including large-scale event coordination), program implementation, and managing across multiple important priorities. Ability to juggle competing priorities successfully, in a timely manner, with a high volume of work in a complex working environment.
Experience utilizing quantitative and qualitative data to identify areas in need of improvement; experience with monitoring/assessing processes and carrying out process improvement efforts.

8+ years of work experience in the student services field, including leadership and managerial experience in undergraduate and/or graduate program development, implementation, and analysis.
Experience in developing and executing financial aid strategy; strong understanding of students' financial needs, barriers, and opportunities.
Advanced knowledge of graduate admissions requirements and processes at a major research university.
Ability to travel and represent the program externally.
Knowledge of student-related, University-specific computer applications programs (e.g., Slate, SOPHAS, PeopleSoft-based student information systems).
Experience in fundraising and/or grant writing.
Advanced degree (master's or higher) in education, higher education administration, counseling/advising, or related field and/or equivalent experience in a higher education environment strongly preferred.
Salary & Benefits
The annual salary range of the position is $110,800 - $128,500, commensurate with experience.
