Job Duties

Provide academic, personal and career counseling, teach counseling courses as needed by department, lead group counseling sessions, workshops and orientations and provide educational planning services for both new and continuing students at the Center for Media and Design Campus. Assist in the development and implementation of student learning outcomes and unit outcomes. Participate in curriculum development, staff development programs and college, departmental and faculty organization activities. Represent the Counseling Department as a lead counselor for the Arts, Media & Entertainment Area of Interest and serve as a member of the Academic Senate Career Education Committee. Provide students with appropriate referrals to campus support services such as financial aid, Psychological Services, DSPS, tutoring, etc.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development  (NOTE: A license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline, pursuant to Title 5 Section 53410.1. OR the equivalent* OR possession of an appropriate valid California Community College Credential authorizing service in the specified subject area(s).

Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the socioeconomic, academic, cultural and ethnic diversity within the college student population including students with physical and/or learning disabilities as these factors relate to differences in learning styles.

 

Preferred Qualifications

A minimum of two years counseling experience in a California Community College, working with students pursuing certificates, associate degrees, transfer and career education in the areas of Entertainment Technology, Graphic Design, Interior Architectural Design, Film Production, Film Studies, Media and Journalism. Experience with Bachelor's degree programs in Interaction Design is highly desirable.  Demonstrated experience working with and understanding the needs of African American, Latin students and other disproportionately impacted populations also highly desired. Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of socio-economic, academic, cultural and ethnic diversity within the community college population including students with physical and/or learning disabilities.
