Assistant Professor of Theatre: Artist/Scholar in Theatre Arts/History and Theory

Description and Qualifications:

The School of Theatre Arts (SoTA) at Illinois Wesleyan University invites applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level, to begin August 2020. The successful candidate will possess a terminal degree, PhD at the time of appointment preferred. We particularly invite applications from candidates who identify as a member of an underrepresented group(s). The successful candidate must demonstrate an ability to contextualize world theatre and storytelling for underserved populations. We welcome a teacher and artist with established connections with the professional theatre community who can also be committed to creating strong ties to our campus community. The School of Theatre Arts is seeking an individual who will provide strong leadership and stability to the BA Theatre Arts degree, aligning it with current best practices. This is a program that is designed for students with a wide range of interests and abilities. The successful candidate will provide future direction, vision, and growth to the BA in Theatre Arts degree in a manner that will allow the program to evolve and be
inclusive of the breadth of study within the theatre program as a whole.

Our new colleague will contribute:

In Teaching: This position engages substantially with theatre curriculum and all students in SoTA by teaching core courses in Theatre History, Dramatic Literature, the evolution of theatre theory and in the delivery of writing pedagogy within the major at all levels, and providing mentorship and advisement of related practicums or degree projects. The person in this position may also have the opportunity to teach in individualised areas of expertise such as: performance, directing, theatre education, design, voice/speech, production management.

In Research: The Professor of Theatre Arts/History and Theory may participate in the creation of theatrical productions for SoTA’s co-curricular production program by directing on rotation. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to sustain active professional engagement as a scholar/artist nationally or internationally. These projects could include activity that includes collaboration with student scholar-artists.

In Service: Leadership in the BA Theatre Arts degree, curriculum development, advising, and recruiting prospective students. Participation in faculty governance in the School of Theatre Arts and at the University is also expected.

The School of Theatre Arts at Illinois Wesleyan University is a vibrant pre-professional program serving approximately 100 majors. It is one of four professional schools at the university existing within a traditional liberal arts matrix. Theatre students may pursue a BA or one of three BFA degrees in Acting, Design/Technology or Music Theatre.
