The integrated Translational Health Research Institute of Virginia (iTHRIV) at the University of Virginia seeks a self-motivated communications coordinator who is a resilient writer, meets deadlines, and works well independently and as part of a team. The ideal candidate will have experience writing for different types of media channels including websites, newsletters, newspapers, press releases and magazines. The communications coordinator will be able to write a story, pitch it (know the process to do so) and work to get the story published.


This position will coordinate marketing and events between iTHRIV partner institutions across the state of Virginia, including healthcare systems and academic centers, and with national partners in the NIH-funded Clinical Translational Science Award network. Duties include developing and publishing content for social media, newsletters, the website, and print media for a variety of audiences. The position will develop layout design and concept, select and secure appropriate illustrative materials to be used; proofread copy; maintain internal posting of policies, forms, and related data as provided. The position will maintain a current, comprehensive and interactive news section helping shape and lead the team as it uses different venues (many of them online) for a common goal; to enhance the culture and environment at iTHRIV through communication. The communications coordinator may also support development and organization of iTHRIV programs and events by developing advertising materials, program brochures, and printed materials. In addition, the communications coordinator will be responsible for developing and managing the iTHRIV communication plan, which includes integration with the NIH Center for Leading Innovation and Collaboration (CLIC).

Position Responsibilities:

  • Consults with iTHRIV operational and leadership teams to develop strategy to promote awareness, education, and engagement of/with iTHRIV programs.
  • Develop and edit content for websites, advertisements and other internal and external communications.
  • Develop and manage social media campaigns including Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.
  • Collect and analyze data authenticating efficacy of marketing campaigns.
  • Manage mass marketing campaigns using internal mass communication software.
  • Maintain branding standards for iTHRIV with understanding of individual partner institution requirements and considerations.
  • Uphold, update and enforce the iTHRIV style guide.
  • Maintain relationships with print vendors and oversee all print materials produced for the Institute including brochures, booklets, programs, flyers, announcements, banners, business cards, websites and power points.
  • Consult on and produce graphics, icons, organizational charts and logos.
  • Coordinate with marketing and communication teams at iTHRIV partner institutions.

Required skills:

  • Work independently and as part of a team.
  • Copy editing.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

iThriv Communications Coordinator, Generalist 1:

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, journalism, English or marketing with at least one year of related experience is required.

iThriv Communications Coordinator, Generalist 2:

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, journalism, English or marketing with at least three years of related experience is required.

The hiring level for this position is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.
