General Summary

The Assistant Dean role within the Dean of Students Office is responsible for serving the urgent needs of students and the campus community by assisting students with personal, family, health and/or mental health issues that are impeding their ability to be academically successful. The Assistant Dean of Students serves to aid in providing services that advise, educate and advocate for students, through formal and informal interventions on issues of academic progress and success, student conduct, health and wellness and safety. The primary purpose of the Dean of Students Office is to resolve issues which impact a student’s ability to remain in school.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Leads institutional advocacy and retention initiatives:
    • Responsible for academic processes including Absence Notifications and Administrative Withdrawals for students with health issues or personal crises.
    • Consults with faculty to manage classroom concerns and retain students who are struggling with behavioral issues or personal crises impacting their ability to participate effectively.
    • Provides academic remedies under Title IX such as course changes, housing or facility changes, and issues no contact directives .
    • Provides financial advocacy and resources including the Student Emergency Assistance Fund to retain students.
    • Actively responds to and interacts with Public Safety, University Counseling Services, Center for Students with Disabilities, Residential Education, Health Promotion and Wellness, Financial Aid, Student Accounts, University Registrar, Academic Affairs, all 10 academic colleges, Mission and Ministry, and the Office of the General Counsel to resolve situations impacting the retention of students.
  • Provides initial contact for students in assessment, resolution and/or referral on student concerns and crises:
    • Establishes and maintains a full time Dean of Students presence on campus including day to day operations, outreach and overall coordination services.
    • Assists students in navigating University systems by clarifying their concerns, identifying their goals and considering all of their options in managing or resolving their concerns.
    • Risk management.
    • Works with highly sensitive and/or confidential information.
    • Consults with family members as well as notifying family members during student crises and emergencies, including illnesses and hospitalizations.
    • Serves as the University point of contact and primary responder to student deaths, contacting family members, college deans, and university offices.
  • Administers Student Conduct Process & Resolves complaints that violate the Code of Student Responsibility through Administrative and University Board hearings:
    • Responds to complaints and concerns raised by members of the University community and those who are not affiliated with the University.
    • Responds to complaints of discrimination and harassment between students.
    • Assists with training the University Board members and serve as Moderator for University Board hearings.
    • Provides Dean Certifications for graduate programs, military and government programs, study abroad, undergraduate transfers and other requests.
  • University Wide Impact:
    • Responds to and resolves concerns assessed by Student Care Team (University’s Threat Assessment Team).
    • Serves in a 24/7 on call capacity for the entire campus community (Dean on Call).
    • Assists with responding to campus demonstrations and controversial events.
    • Participates in planning, preparation and presenting at New Student Orientation and Parent Orientation.
    • Participates in FEST and other University-wide events.
    • Represents the Dean of Students Office and/or Student Affairs in Divisional and University committees, working groups and task forces.
    • Participates in assessment and evaluation activities for the department and Division.
  • Management and Supervision:
    • Hires, trains, supervises and evaluates graduate interns and graduate assistants.
    • Assists in managing the institutional, divisional and departmental systems and processes such as Maxient, Campus Connect, Blue Star and Image Now.
  • Peforms other duties as assigned.


Education & Experience

  • Master's Degree in Education, Counseling, or related field.
  • 5-7 years progressive professional experience in higher education.


Preferred Requirements

  • Experience in Residence Life, Counseling, Student Conduct, crisis management and advocacy work for students strongly.


Managerial Responsibilities

  • Hires, trains, evaluates and supervises graduate interns and/or graduate assistants.


Other Skills & Abilities Reqd

  • Strong computer skills.
  • Experience working with Outlook, Excel and Microsoft Word.
