In 1921-22, in keeping with a growing trend across the nation, Berkeley's Department of Psychology was established as a separate unit, emerging from the Department of Philosophy. For nearly a century, the department has been a national and international leader in psychological research and the superior educational programs that we have provided to undergraduates and doctoral students.

Today, our award winning faculty conduct ground-breaking research in many areas of psychology, including behavioral and systems neuroscience, clinical science, cognition, cognitive neuroscience, development, social, and personality. Our PhD students go on to exciting careers in academia (e.g. Yale, Stanford, UCLA), industry (e.g., Facebook, Google), healthcare (e.g., Oakland Children's Hospital, Seattle VA) and policy (e.g., National Institute of Justice).

The Psychology Department at University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for several full time positions to support and contribute to research within the Golden Bear Sleep and Mood Research Centre (GBSMRC) at the University of California, Berkeley, which is led by Allison Harvey, Ph.D. and funded by NIMH and NICHD.

The successful applicants will join our multi-disciplinary team. We are aiming to contribute to the exciting growing field of dissemination and implement science. Specifically, an obstacle to the roll-out of evidence-based treatments (EBTs) for severe mental illness (SMI) is that the context for the implementation of a new treatment typically differs from the original testing context causing a lack of “fit” between the setting and the EBT. Our research will evaluate if adapting a specific treatment to improve the contextual fit improves outcomes in community mental health centres (CMHCs). This research will be conducted in CMHCs across California, probably including the following counties: Solano, Kings, Stanislaus, Alameda, Monterey, Placer, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz and Contra Costa. The EBT we will disseminate is a psychosocial treatment that aims to improve sleep and circadian functioning in SMI. This focus was selected because sleep and circadian dysfunction undermines affect regulation, cognitive function and physical health, predicts the onset and worsening of symptoms and is often chronic even with evidence-based SMI treatment.

The team will employ an implementation strategy known as facilitation. Facilitation is a well-documented and evidence-based implementation strategy that is guided by the i-PARIHS implementation science framework. Facilitation involves an integrated bundle of evidence-based implementation strategies informed by implementation science. It arose from decades of implementation science showing limitations with both top-down mandates and bottom-up approaches. Instead, the facilitation approach embraces complexity and the changing needs over time and context. We will document the facilitation process to share with others involved in implementation science. We will prioritize learning about, and developing ways, for our community partners to bill for the sleep treatment as reimbursements will promote sustainment.

The positions include a variety of duties such as facilitating positive relationships with community partners, coordinating and facilitating research within the community settings (e.g., recruiting providers and consumers, conducting trainings), problem solving, ensuring the study remains on the timeline required for the timely completion of the research and representing UC Berkeley at meetings and community partner events. The positions will involve regular travel to the counties, particularly during the set-up phase.

The incumbent will be mentored to facilitate their career development. It may albso be possible to create opportunities for supervision, if needed for licensure.

More information about the research team and ongoing projects can be found at our lab's web site: https://psychology.berkeley.edu/people/allison-harvey
