Departmental Overview

The Chemistry Department provides the opportunity to obtain a thorough fundamental knowledge of all fields of chemistry. There are lecture courses in the general areas of inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry, plus many more specialized courses including analytical, nuclear, and biophysical chemistry and chemical biology. Laboratory experience is provided in inorganic and organic synthesis, analytical methods, physical chemical measurements, spectroscopy, biochemical engineering, and chemical methods in nuclear technology.

Instructional Support Administration (ISA) members are responsible for the administrative support of both lab and theory courses. Staff members enable the smooth delivery of courses by helping instructors with both administrative and practical aspects of course delivery.

The Instructional Support Facilities Manager oversees activities in finance and human resources and may also include IT, facilities or student services. General management includes long and short range strategic planning in determining the mission and directing all activities of multi-disciplinary departments.

Responsibilities

Operations Management:
  • Independently monitors Instructional Unit annual budget.
  • Hires, directs and evaluates technical and administrative staff.
  • Coordinates and oversees activities, staffing, resources and work assignments.
  • Ensures regulatory and EH&S compliance in laboratories and work areas.

    Facilities and Equipment Management:
  • Oversees equipment inventories.
  • Facilitates maintenance and repairs, and initiates modernization of labs.
  • Approves service contracts for major instruments.
  • Determines lab room and equipment usage and schedule.

    Course Administration:
  • Provides full range of administrative services to all lab courses.
  • Monitors enrollments in all lab courses and adjusts sections to optimize enrollments.

    Course Development and Instruction:
  • Works with faculty to develop new experiments and to ensure their safety and affordability
  • Assists faculty in implementing new technologies in lectures and laboratory coursework

    Student Instructor Administration:
  • Consults with Director of Undergraduate Chemistry to determine course staffing needs.
  • Works with Department's Graduate unit to ensure instructional support requirements are met.
  • With input from the course instructors, the department office, and chair, assigns graduate student instructors to courses for Fall and Spring semesters, and for Summer Sessions.
  • Recruits and hires qualified graduate student instructors for chemistry courses
  • Works to resolve problems involving GSIs, faculty, students, and the department.

    Required Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of University rules and regulations, processes, protocols and procedures for budget, account and fund management, personnel management or equivalent knowledge
  • Advanced knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques, human resources policies and procedures for staff and academic employees
  • Knowledge of common University - specific computer application programs or equivalent knowledge
  • Advanced knowledge of a variety of administrative operations activates such as event planning, basic fundraising processes, risk management planning, website design, accounting and payroll, and contracts and grants regulations and guidelines
  • Advanced interpersonal communication skills to include verbal and written, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising, and counseling skills
  • Advanced skills in short and long term strategic planning, analysis, and problem solving and customer service
  • Technical expertise for making decisions on technical matters in an instructional laboratory facility
  • Knowledge of EH&S, chemical management and waste disposal regulations and procedures
  • Proven ability to organize unit work functions in an efficient and effective manner
  • Multicultural competencies, ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of constituents, including faculty, students, staff administration and other campus locations.

    Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or equivalent combination of education/experience

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Chemistry or experience in managing laboratory research facilities

    Salary & Benefits

    This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
