Departmental Overview

UC Berkeley is ideally positioned to facilitate the commercialization of research to the marketplace. The campus has comprehensive excellence across many disciplines and is deeply embedded in the Bay Area innovation ecosystem, and enjoys significant research partnerships with industry. The Bakar Fellows Program was established in 2012 to build on existing campus strengths to facilitate and enhance the efforts of UC Berkeley's world-class faculty to translate important scientific discoveries into practical solutions in the fields of Engineering, Computer Science, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, and in multidisciplinary work in these areas.

Faculty members selected as Bakar Fellows each receive discretionary research support for a maximum of five years. In addition, the Fellows become part of and contribute to an ecosystem that brings together faculty, post-docs, students, staff and alumni to form a strong network that assists researchers in introducing their discoveries to the market. The Bakar Fellows program will support five cohorts of early career faculty on a rolling basis with the first cohort recruited in 2012/13. Each cohort consists of several faculty working in areas with a high likelihood of contributing to California's economy.

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research has overall managerial responsibility for Berkeley's research enterprise including industry partnerships and technology transfer.

Responsibilities

The Bakar Program Coordinator is responsible for the administration and operations of the Bakar Fellows Program and assist with the campus functions of the Bakar BioEnginuity Hub (BBH). The programs support innovative research by early career faculty at UC Berkeley with a special focus on projects that hold commercial promise. Reporting to the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, the Program Coordinator will facilitate all aspects of program activities (application and selection process, events and activities, fellow relations), administer the program budget and other related resources, and serve as a primary contact for external constituents including semi-annual reporting to non-profit foundations.
  • Directs and administers an independent program with complete administrative and programmatic responsibility including facilitating the annual selection of Fellows (application process, selection process, awarding process), manage and track individual awards, collaborate with staff across the campus to maximize opportunities for program participants and enhance existing ecosystem that assists researchers in introducing their discoveries to the market
  • Facilitates and coordinates efforts of faculty and outside constituencies who may serve as mentors and advisors (including potential investors, legal teams, etc.) to ensure productive and collaborative relationships
  • Manages and produces high quality forums & events; advertises program to campus community and external constituents; works in collaboration with science writers to highlight Bakar Fellows projects; manages and updates program website (including application process, news updates, event feed etc.); maintains mailing lists; addresses or directs awardee questions.
  • Coordinates and participates in activities of advisory boards including facilitating periodic and ad-hoc meetings, setting strategic directions, funding and objectives, allocating program resources, evaluating programs and activities, and formal semi-annual reporting to funding organizations.
  • Oversees and controls program budgeting and accounting processes to support financial infrastructure of program.
  • Serves on committees representing the Program and participates in professional conferences

Required Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Rigorous self-starter who is passionate about science and working with leading university researchers.
  • Management and leadership experience in academic and/or entrepreneurial/industry setting.
  • Expertise in administrative, operational, budgetary, and financial principles and practices.
  • Expert ability to work with dynamic and diverse group of researchers and external collaborators.
  • Excellent understanding of and appreciation for market-oriented entrepreneurial approaches AND the needs, goals and deadline pressures under which academic scientists across the disciplines get their work done.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and negotiation skills, including political acumen, social perceptiveness, and an understanding of different cultures and social norms.
  • Demonstrated expertise with program building within academic institutions.
  • Demonstrated expertise in building collaborations between academia and industry organizations.
  • Demonstrated expertise in design and delivery of polished events, as well as branding/communication of events.
