Overview

The Digital Imaging Technician at Princeton University Library (PUL)  is involved in the preparation and photography/scanning of library materials, principally using a bound item copy system, comprised of specialized cameras and medium format digital backs. The successful candidate will be part of a team of eight technicians dedicated to providing access to world class collections in support of PUL's mission and vision. 

 

Candidates invited for an interview should be prepared to demonstrate basic image editing ability and show photographic skill through a small sampling of photographs, in analog or digital form. 

 

Responsibilities

The individual in this role will work with a copy stand/digital camera (35mm or medium format) system, flatbed scanners or a high-production microform scanner.  The Technician has responsibility for image processing, editing and organizing digital files on Macintosh and Windows systems, as well as photographic documentation of conservation treatment.

 

The successful candidate will use bibliographic data from the catalog/finding aid record to develop directory structure and potentially add structural data to items using customized repository tools. The incumbent self-manages and documents workflow, from retrieving, securing and returning materials through image capture, processing and repository ingest.

 

 

Qualifications

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree required 
• Experience with the same or similar digital imaging systems as described above (i.e. high-resolution digital backs, DSLRs, copy stands, photographic lighting, etc)
• Familiarity with bibliographic systems to sufficiently identify descriptive elements 
• Ability to work for extended periods in a low-light, color-managed work environment
• Ability to work accurately in a detail- and production-oriented environment
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary production team setting as well as independently
• Good decision-making, communication, record-keeping and basic math skills.

 

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience handling special collections materials, including bound materials, graphic arts and manuscripts for digital library photography and conservation documentation
• Skill in using Macintosh and Windows desktop computer systems and associated hardware and software, including Capture One, Adobe Photoshop, calibration software, spreadsheet and database software
• Ability to discriminate tonal variations and color fidelity of digital reproductions in relation to original objects
• Facilitating preservation assessments and photographic documentation with preservation office staff
• Recording through an online registry the incoming and outgoing items from the imaging studio
• Assisting in coordinating with curators and other stakeholders on the organization and preparation of original items for delivery to the digital imaging studio
• Assisting in consultation with stakeholders on the feasibility of digital photography of items approved for digitization
