Job Summary

The Financial Aid Specialist reports to the Director of Financial Aid. Responsible for providing information, advice and assistance regarding various types of Federal and State financial aid available to students on campus and students enrolled in the Inmate Education Program. The Financial Aid Specialist is responsible for the administration of all financial programs. Minimum travel required. Performs other duties as assigned. Must be able to pass and maintain Federal Clearance for the prison.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate degree with two to four years’ experience in jobs leading to this, or similar jobs is required.

Knowledge of computerized electronic processes in the delivery of financial aid. Experience with automated systems related financial aid management (BANNER, preferred). Competent in the use of Microsoft Office software.

Knowledge of federal and state financial assistance educational programs. Working knowledge of personal computer and various software.

Effective written and verbal communication.

Solve problems and multi-task.

Assist students, faculty and staff in professional manner.

Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of students from diverse backgrounds.

Plan, schedule, and manage projects and assignments.

Promote a positive campus image and establish effective working relationships with others.

Comply with college policies and procedures.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk, see and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, kneel, bend, crawl and twist upper body. The employee must regularly carry and lift up to 5 pounds, and move up to 5 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of financial aid processing for federal, state and local programs. Knowledge of Banner software a plus. Knowledge of Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four year college or university is preferred.

1. Manage front counter operations.
2. Serve as receptionist, duties including answering telephone, forwarding calls, taking messages.
3. Provide answers to questions from student, faculty, staff and the public relating to financial aid.
4. Enter 3rd party agency charges to student accounts.
5. Monitor student refund checks.

6. Analyzes student’s applications and determine eligibility for financial aid. Requests additional documents as needed. Verifies information on those who have been chosen for verification.
7. Awards aid and types up award or denial letters.
8. Advises students concerning reasonable academic progress, determines whether or not a student is in violation, discusses normal procedures necessary to get out of violation status, and recommends appeal procedures for unusual circumstances.
9. Advises student concerning short-term loan eligibility and terms.

10. Completes the financial aid folder and enters documentation received into the computer.
11. Scan and indexes files.
12. Performs outreach activities to area high schools, community centers, shopping centers, and various agencies giving financial aid presentations and disseminating information on types of aid, eligibility, and application processes.
