The Department of Agricultural and Human Sciences educates students in agricultural education, leadership and youth, family, and community sciences. We aim to improve the health and well-being of youth, families, and communities, both locally and globally. We do this through academic programs in agricultural and extension education and youth, family, and community sciences that are offered at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Faculty in the Department work across the functions of extension, research, and teaching to serve students and stakeholders.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) grant at North Carolina State University, Steps to Health, facilitates the delivery of nutrition education programs to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients and those eligible for SNAP across North Carolina.

Essential Job Duties

The Curriculum Development Extension Associate position will be part of NC State University’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance-Education (SNAP-Ed) and an integral part of the Steps to Health program in the Department of Agricultural and Human Sciences. In addition to working with faculty and staff at NC State, this position interfaces with statewide, county, and district Cooperative Extension staff and volunteers, as well as other state and community-based agency/organization professionals and volunteers.

This position will serve as a lead for maintaining all Steps to Health direct nutrition education materials and programs that are targeted toward limited resource audiences. The position will update, revise, and write educational materials that will reflect the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPlate. Additionally, this position will be responsible for training Cooperative Extension staff and volunteers on curricula, and to set expectations for program fidelity. The incumbent will also ensure that all curriculum materials, videos, and social media are consistent with language reflecting positive messages about food and are culturally appropriate. The incumbent will work under the guidance and direct supervision of the Steps to Health Program Coordinator.

Essential job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as a lead for maintenance of all Steps to Health direct nutrition education materials and programs.
  • Update, revise, and write educational materials that will reflect MyPlate nutritional messages and the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
  • Collaborate with Extension Specialists on the grant to produce evidence-based materials for target population.
  • Work with the team to ensure that all curriculum materials, videos, and social media reflect consistent messages to participants related to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
  • Ensure that all curriculum materials, videos, and social media are consistent with language reflecting positive messages about food and are culturally appropriate.
  • Set expectations for program fidelity and what must be covered within the curriculum to achieve program impacts.
  • Stay informed of trends in instructional methods and educational technology, and introduce ideas for incorporating new technology into the curriculum.
  • Provide in-service training, program observations, and provide follow-up technical assistance for Steps to Health direct education programs.
  • Offer technical assistance for Steps to Health county projects to ensure accurate delivery of programs.
  • Assist with grant writing and submission.
  • Attend state and/or national conferences and meetings.

Minimum Education/Experience
  • Master’s degree in nutrition, public health, or closely related field, with 3 or more years of experience working with nutrition-related programs.
  • Experience working with programs that are delivered in community settings.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
  • Doctorate degree in nutrition, public health, or closely related field.
  • Experience with Cooperative Extension and the Land Grant University system.
  • Innovative and creative thinker.
  • Experience in nutrition curriculum development.
  • Skills in using technology to reach limited resource individuals.
  • Registered Dietitian (RD) or Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist (LDN).
Required License or Certification
  • A valid NC drivers license is required for travel. NC drivers license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
