Job Details
The primary responsibility of a faculty member at Northern Virginia Community College is to provide quality instruction for the students. The major emphasis shall be on good teaching by working with students in classrooms, laboratories, individual conferences, and related activities—to help the student develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity to become a better person, a better worker, and a better citizen.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesFull-time teaching faculty members are responsible for teaching various courses in Mathematics. Courses are offered in traditional, hybrid, and distance learning formats. All faculty members must be available to teach day, evening, and weekend classes. Faculty members also serve as faculty advisers, serve on division/campus/college committees and participate in curriculum development. This position has a normal teaching load of 15 credits per semester.
Minimum QualificationsMaster’s degree in Mathematics or master’s degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in Mathematics coursework. The successful candidate must be willing to teach a combination of day, evening, weekend, and online classes with the ability to be flexible to work at any of the College’s locations. Successful completion and passing of a criminal background check is required.
Preferred QualificationsExperience teaching developmental mathematics courses and college credit mathematics.
Some community college or university teaching experience is preferred.
Experience teaching hybrid and/or online courses, and mathematics courses of varying levels of proficiency. Experience using software packages such as MyMathLab, ALEKS, or WebAssign. Demonstrated proficiency and experience in using instructional technologies and learning management systems (e.g. Blackboard or Canvas) with the ability to use technology to enhance teaching.
Ability to use technology to enhance instruction; excellent interpersonal, analytical, and oral/written communication skills; ability to effectively teach classrooms and labs; experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at NOVA.
