The Office of Academic Assistance in the College of Arts and Sciences is seeking to hire a dynamic and skilled Academic Advisor III. The Academic Advisor III will perform advanced level academic advisement functions such as facilitating academic program development, advisement, interpretation and implementation of University policies and procedures for the College of Arts and Sciences. Provides information to, and advises both enrolled and prospective students regarding the academic programs offered by the University or a specific department, including requirements for admission and retention through graduation; may coordinate the work of entry level academic advisors.


The scope of responsibilities will include these essential duties but is not limited to the following,

  • Evaluates and advises on academic programs and progress of students

  • Coordinates and communicates with faculty on academic program changes or updates

  • Assesses college’s compliance with Board of Regents degree requirements

  • Trains and supervises staff and/or student assistants

  • Provides and/or oversees graduation checkouts and audits management for the college

  • Maintains and updates current student records on information system

  • Performs admissions and recruitment functions for college in conjunction with Undergraduate Admissions

  • Performs other advanced academic advisement duties as assigned by college

  • May teach or co-teach GSU 1010 classes

  • Liaison responsibilities to a specific college, academic unit or cluster. Represent academic advising units on college and University committees

  • Assist in the development and implementation of college and University training for advisement personnel

  • Has leadership role in monitoring and tracking the retention, progression and graduation of all students within assigned population

  • Serve as lead worker for program(s) that require coordination – New student orientation, social media, transfer articulation, retention, progression and graduation campaigns, Dual Degree, BIS, Banner, graduate student admission requirements, etc.

  • Coordinates special programs such as Dual Degree and/or BIS.

  • Assists in reviewing student petitions

  • Conducts informational sessions for an academic department



QualificationsBachelor's degree and 5 years of related experience; or a combination of education and experience.

More than 50,000 students annually attend Georgia State University. While 90 percent of the students are from Georgia, students also come from all 50 states and 160 countries. Degrees are offered at the bachelor’s, master’s, specialist and doctoral levels through six units: the College of Arts and Sciences, J. Mack Robinson College of Business, College of Education, College of Health and Human Sciences, College of Law and Andrew Young School of Policy Studies. In addition to the numerous degree programs, Georgia State offers full- and part-time programs and day, evening and weekend classes.

Students have many choices in extracurricular activities including more than 22 fraternities and sororities; and some 250 chartered student groups, including 60 degree-related student groups, seven religious, 24 law-oriented and 22 multicultural/international groups; and 10 honor societies. There is also an active student government association which includes the student senate and the judicial board.

The Georgia State Panthers are members of the Colonial Athletic Association and compete in 16 NCAA Division I intercollegiate men’s and women’s sports, including basketball, baseball, softball, golf, tennis, track and volleyball. The university announced in April 2008 that is will begin Division I-AA football in 2010.

The university’s innovative Touch the Earth program brings outdoor recreation ranging from backpacking, rock climbing, sailing, kayaking, rafting and water-skiing to out-of-state snow-skiing and snorkeling trips. And WRAS, Georgia State’s popular 100,000-watt radio voice, is the most powerful student-run radio station in the United States.
