The Department of Clinical Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University seeks applications for an Instructor or Assistant or Associate Professor in Veterinary Communication. We are seeking individuals with exemplary communication and facilitation skills, experience teaching students or coaching healthcare professionals, and a strong research background. The new faculty member could provide leadership, impact delivery of veterinary care, shape the next generation of veterinarians, and influence the direction of an emerging field of study – veterinary communication. The CSU communication curriculum is an internationally recognized model among veterinary colleges and earned accolades from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Education. The program director, Dr. Jane Shaw, DVM, PhD, is one of a handful of experts in veterinary communication, and in 2018 received the Academy on Communication in Healthcare (ACH) teaching excellence award.

Responsibilities:
The distribution of teaching, research and service is negotiable based on the candidate’s rank and background.

Teaching – 45%

DVM Student Communication Coursework

  • Provide instruction as the course coordinator, instructor or coach in each year of the communication curriculum (i.e. Communication Modules in “Foundations in Veterinary Medicine”, Junior Practicum “Clinical Communication Skills” Courses, and Community Practice Senior Rotation)
  • Coordinate, participate in training sessions and facilitate the Healer’s Art, a course focusing on professional renewal and wellness
  • Respond to student needs and concerns in a timely manner
  • Deliver professional development communication coaching workshops for veterinary faculty, practitioner coaches, and simulated clients (SCs)
  • Create coach and simulated client training materials (e.g., schedules, readings, and procedures)
  • Provide continued support, feedback, and sustain relationships with communication coaches and simulated clients (SCs)
  • Conduct instructor briefings to prepare for the course and debriefings to identify strengths and areas for growth for curriculum improvement
  • Create curricular materials (e.g., course packet, learning activities, and videos)
  • Devise and implement assessment tools to evaluate student, instructor, coach and course performance to guide the curriculum
  • Revise curriculum based on student, instructor, coach and simulated client feedback
  • Grade student assignments and support coach grading of video reflection papers
  • Conduct training, provide support and monitor progress of grading support
  • Provide administrative and organizational tasks for course coordination
  • Collaborate with course coordinators in preparing course materials and communication with students, coaches and simulated clients
  • Update, post, and manage course materials on the learning management system (i.e. Canvas)
  • Coordinate, evaluate, and grow the Bayer Excellence in Communication Award program, recognizing student communication performance based on video review and evaluation
  • Collaborate with the Director of Veterinary Communication for Professional Excellence Program in advancing the communication curriculum
  • Communicate with the Center for Advancing Professional Excellence (CAPE) regarding the needs for simulated clients, and address concerns regarding simulated client performance and professional development
  • Collaborate with faculty at the University of Alaska Fairbanks on implementation of the communication curriculum

Service – 30%

Continuing Education (FRANK® and Communication Coaching Skills Workshops)

  • Provide coordination, instruction, and coaching for on average 5 veterinary communication continuing education workshops on an annual basis*
  • Deliver professional development workshops for coaches and simulated clients (i.e. SCs)**
  • Provide continued support, feedback, and sustain relationships with communication coaches and simulated clients
  • Create curricular materials and exercises (i.e. handouts, videos, pre-workshop module and experiential activities)
  • Deliver professional development communication coaching workshops for veterinary faculty and practitioner coaches
  • Create coach and simulated client training materials (e.g., schedules, readings, and procedures)
  • Devise and implement assessment tools for capturing participant, coach, and simulated client feedback
  • Revise curriculum based on participant and partner feedback
  • Collaborate with the Director of Veterinary Communication for Professional Excellence Program in enhancing the communication continuing education program
  • Build and sustain relationships with key veterinary practices and industry partners
  • Present communication sessions and/or workshops at academic and professional conferences Committee Service
  • Serve on department, college and university committees Consulting
  • Build and maintain relationships with industry partners, individual, corporate or large practice groups, and veterinary organizations to provide communication training
  • Generate and provide communication workshops

Research – 25%

Research

  • Identify and apply for education or research grants, and seek internal funding from the college (i.e. College Research Council Grant), and external funding from foundations and industry partners to build a research program
  • Design and implement a research program related to communication, education or related field
  • Contribute to peer-reviewed literature on communication, education or related field
  • Make academic presentations at communication, education, or related field conferences
  • Work closely with the Director of Veterinary Communication for Professional Excellence in expanding the communication research program
  • Build collaborative relationships with colleagues in communication, education and related field within and outside of Colorado State University
  • Build a graduate studies program in veterinary communication
