The Department of Nutrition within the School of Public Health and Health Sciences (SPHHS) applies nutritional science in the delivery of research innovation, teaching excellence, and outreach. The SPHHS is accredited by the Council of Education for Schools of Public Health and consists of the following departments: Nutrition, Kinesiology, Public Health Sciences, Communication Disorders, Environmental Health, Epidemiology/Biostatistics, and Health Promotion and Policy/Community Health Education/Health Policy and Management. Research areas in the Department of Nutrition currently encompass lab-based, community-engaged, and translational research. We offer both in-person (MS, PhD) and online (MS, MPH and MPH/DI) degrees, as well as an undergraduate program (BS) which includes an accredited Dietetics Track. There is also a Dietetic Internship Program. The department is home to the research-based Nutrition Education Program (NEP), which provides nutrition education to communities throughout Massachusetts. Faculty have active collaborations with other SPHHS departments and across the University. The department is affiliated with the state-of-the-art UMass Institute for Applied Life Sciences (IALS) that supports a diverse and growing team of innovators, inventors, clinical researchers, engineers, and basic scientists.

Job Description:

The Department of Nutrition seeks candidates for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level, starting in August/September 2020. The successful candidate will develop a program of research focusing on healthy aging, nutrition across the life course, or nutrition in chronic diseases, with specialty areas including but not limited to precision nutrition, health equity, behavioral health, and minority health; biochemical and molecular nutrition, functional genomics including the microbiome; dietary pattern analysis, nutrition and food policy, and community-engaged research. Transnational research, clinical research, and research addressing population health and the needs of vulnerable communities is highly desirable. This appointment provides an outstanding opportunity for research and teaching collaboration across a broad range of disciplines.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Ph.D in Nutritional Sciences or related discipline.
  • Post-doctoral research experience preferred.
  • Potential for obtaining independent external research funding and/or prior history of successful external research funding.
  • Record of peer reviewed publications commensurate with experience.
  • A strong interest in teaching/advising, with commitment to teaching students with diverse learning styles, backgrounds and intellectual interests.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) credential preferred but not required.

Anticipated Start Date: September 1, 2020

Prospective Faculty Information:

RANK: Assistant Professor, full time tenure-track nine-month appointment.

Salary/Benefits: Salary is commensurate with qualification and experience. The university provides a generous benefits package.
