JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

The WPI Robotics Engineering (RBE) Program (www.wpi.edu/+RBE) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position of open rank.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field, including Computer Science or Electrical and Computer Engineering. Candidates with expertise in machine learning and perception in robotics are particularly encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will expand and synergize with our existing research strengths in autonomous and connected vehicles, multi-robot systems, swarm robotics, planning, dynamics and control.

We are looking for individuals who value innovation, creativity, diversity, inclusion, and collaboration. Applicants must show potential for or accomplishments in an innovative and sustainable research and teaching career. WPI expects faculty to be involved in a balance of research, teaching, and service.

WPI Robotics, an ABET-accredited program, counts approximately 370 undergraduate and 180 graduate students and offers robotics engineering BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees. In 2016 the program was awarded the inaugural ABET Innovation Award for its truly interdisciplinary, project-based curriculum that integrates Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The 18 core and 20+ affiliated robotics faculty members have research support from NSF, NIH, AFRL, ONR, NASA, DARPA, and industry funding. Our robotics laboratories include numerous and diverse robotic platforms. In addition to existing robotics facilities, faculty will have access to PracticePoint, a healthcare robotics R&D facility that is designed to promote collaboration between faculty, the medical robotics and cyber-physical systems industry, the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and physicians. We expect our faculty to contribute to the exceptionally close-knit, collaborative, and collegial atmosphere we currently enjoy.

WPI’s reputation as a rigorous and innovative university rests on the shoulders of its faculty. A highly selective, private technological university and one of the nation’s first, WPI believes that when great minds work together, great advances follow. At WPI the boundaries to multidisciplinary collaboration are low — faculty members, students, and other partners work together in a diverse and inclusive community on the real-world projects and purposeful research that are hallmarks of the WPI experience. We are most proud of a recent No. 1 ranking for “faculty who best combine research and teaching” (Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Ed, 2016). Located one hour west of Boston, the university campus is in Worcester, Massachusetts. The second largest city in New England, Worcester is a thriving 21st century college city recognized as a growing hub of scientific and technological innovation.

Applicants should submit a recent curriculum vitae including a complete publication list, separate statements summarizing teaching and research experiences, interests, and leadership (particularly in the area of robotics), and names and email addresses of at least three references. Applicants should describe within their research and teaching statements how they contribute to diverse, equitable, and inclusive learning and working environments.

Applications should be received by December 10, 2019. Applications will be reviewed as they are received; therefore, applicants are encouraged to apply early.

WPI is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified candidates will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, age, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran status, or disability. We are seeking individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences who will contribute to a culture of creativity and collaboration, inclusion, problem solving and change making.

Organization

Founded in Worcester, Mass., in 1865, WPI was one of the nation's earliest technological universities. From our founding days, WPI has taken a unique approach to science and technology education.

Our undergraduate and graduate students emerge ready to take on some of the most difficult challenges in science and technology. More important, they understand how their work can truly impact society and improve our lives. WPI campus

Great Minds at Work in the classroom and around the world
WPI's academic departments offer more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in science, engineering, technology, management, the social sciences, and the humanities and arts, leading to the BA, BS, MS, ME, MBA, and PhD.

At sites as close as our home city of Worcester and at over 40 other locations in 25 countries,WPI’s Global Projects Program immerses students in new cultures to tackle unstructured problems in ways that are meaningful to local sponsors in real communities. This is not your typical study abroad.

WPI faculty members and students are engaged in advanced, multidisciplinary research across a broad range of fields—from cutting-edge work in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, to explorations of the technological and policy issues surrounding cybersecurity, to studies of issues as diverse as firefighter health and security and the fire safety challenges of green buildings.

A highly regarded institution

Among recent honors for WPI are the 2016 Bernard M. Gordon Prize for Innovation in Engineering and Technology Education and the No. 1 ranking for “faculty who best combine research and teaching.” (Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Ed, 2016)

WPI professorA beautiful campus in a central location
WPI’s compact 95-acre campus is set atop one of Worcester’s “seven hills” on the residential outskirts of town. Old English stone buildings are focal points of the architecture, but modern facilities have moved in to claim their own space on the immaculately kept grounds. WPI’s newest building, the Foisie Innovation Studio, is slated to open in Fall 2018 and will house high-tech classrooms, makerspaces, labs, and a residence hall for 140 students.
