Job Details
UNC Greensboro, located in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina, is a higher-research activity university as classified by the Carnegie Foundation. Primary Purpose of the Organizational UnitThe Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (LLC) is engaged in cross-cultural research, teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and service with diverse local and global connections. It is a large department in the College of Arts and Sciences with 47 full-time faculty members: 12 tenure-line and 35 full-time lecturers or visiting assistant professors. Additional instruction is provided by 12 part-time lecturers and varying numbers of teaching assistants and tutors.
Eight languages are currently taught in LLC: American Sign Language (ASL), Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish; Korean will be added in 2020-21. The department has approximately 200 first- and second-majors pursuing a BA degree in Spanish or a BA in Languages, Literatures, and Cultures with concentrations in French and Francophone Studies, German Studies, Global Languages and Communities, and Applied Language: K-12 Teaching Licensure (French, Spanish). Minors are available in ASL, Chinese, French, German, Russian, and Spanish. LLC also has about 15 graduate students pursuing the MA degree in Languages, Literatures, and Cultures with a concentration in French and Francophone Studies or Spanish or the MEd or MAT degree in French or Spanish. In addition, the department offers a 15-hour Post-Baccalaureate certificate in Advanced Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultural Studies. The Department actively participates in language studies consortia within the UNC distance education system as well as in interdisciplinary programs throughout the College of Arts and Sciences, particularly International and Global Studies (IGS), Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS), Environment and Sustainability (EVS), and African American and African Diaspora Studies (AADS). Faculty also have affiliations with a variety of internal research networks, including the Humanities Network and Consortium (HNAC), the Atlantic World Research Network (AWRN), the Human Rights Research Network (HRRN), and the Islamic World Research Network (IWRN). Online courses, including four-semester language sequences for French, German, and Spanish, and an online German Minor program are available to distance-learning students across the globe.
Position SummaryThe Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at UNC Greensboro invites applications for an Associate Professor or Professor of German Studies to begin August 1, 2020. While the field of specialization is open, the successful candidate should bring expertise that enhances interdisciplinary offerings and attract students from outside German Studies: e.g., transnationalism/transculturalism, migration studies, translation studies, race/ethnicity, gender and sexuality, media studies, environment and sustainability.
Applicants must hold a PhD in German Studies or German Language, Literatures, and Cultures, or related fields. They must have attained the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, or an equivalent rank, by August 1, 2020. A native or near-native proficiency in German and English is required.
Applicants should also have achieved a record of excellence in teaching, maintained a strong research agenda, and acquired extensive administrative experience. A commitment to working collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds and across department programs is likewise a priority. Experience or strong interest in curriculum development, major recruitment, teaching in a variety of learning environments (traditional, online, hybrid), pursuing opportunities for internal and external funding, participating in interdisciplinary initiatives, and/or working with study abroad programs is a plus.
Duties will include: leading the German Studies program; teaching undergraduate courses on German language, literatures, and cultures for majors and non-majors at all levels; teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the LLC curriculum and, where appropriate, courses in field-related interdisciplinary programs; maintaining an active research agenda; and contributing substantively to priorities of the Department, the College, and University, including ongoing initiatives around diversity and inclusion. This position may likewise entail supporting UNCG’s Global Village living-learning community, enhancing community engagement, and collaborating with interdisciplinary programs like IGS, WGS, and EVS.
