The Bancroft Library of the University of California, Berkeley, is one of the largest and most heavily used libraries of rare materials in the West. Its holdings include more than 690,000 volumes, 175 million manuscript items, 9 million photographs and other pictorial materials, 86,000 microforms, 4.3 million digital files, and 25,000 maps, as well as numerous other categories of unique material. The two largest collections are the Bancroft Collection of Western and Latin Americana and the Rare Books Collection. The archival and rare book materials of the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life are also part of the Bancroft holdings. The Bancroft is home to three research groups: the Oral History Center (formerly the Regional Oral History Office); the Mark Twain Papers; and the Center for the Tebtunis Papyri. The Bancroft Library is an active center of teaching and research. Under general supervision of the Appraisal and Intake Archivist, the Archives Accessioning Assistant is responsible for assisting with all aspects of the appraisal and accessioning process, including:

  • Using advanced professional archival concepts and objectives to appraise archival collections, reviewing collections for comprehensiveness and identifying similar collection material. Reviewing duplicative material for retention or disposal and determines necessary actions to protect confidentiality and sensitive materials.
  • Communicating and preparing correspondence with donors, coordinating with curators and acquisitions staff to ensure timely completion of donor gift agreements and record transfer forms, accessioning collections in various databases/collection systems /online catalogs.
  • Creating preliminary lists and basic catalog records for materials. Carrying out basic cataloging and arrangement and description of archival materials.
  • Coordinating all activities involved in the physical transfer of new archival collections from donors to the Bancroft Library. Appropriately packing and/or repacking archival materials for archival transfer and storage. Lifting cartons weighing up to 40 pounds and climb ladders up to 12-feet (required).
  • Working with teams of library professionals, for various special processing/cataloging projects and works with librarians or other staff members in acquiring or processing material.

    This work entails a significant level of communication via e-mail and telephone with all levels of Bancroft staff, donors, and Campus Move Services.
