Residential and Student Service Programs (RSSP) is a complex "cluster" of departments with an aggregated operating budget of approximately $125 million, a head count of over 2,000 employees in over 150 buildings (2.7 million square feet) that provide a variety of services to faculty, staff, students and the surrounding campus community. These services include an orientation and transition programs for incoming students, an inclusive community that fosters academic success and personal growth for our residents, single student and family housing for 7,500 students and (in some cases) their families, dining options for the campus and community, an early childhood education program, and conference operations during the summer.

In Residential Education within RSSP this position is charged with planning, developing and implementing programs, services, activities and processes for students in their non-academic life at the University Village Family Housing facility residential students at the University of California, Berkeley. This includes residential life, public service, student conduct, gender identity and sexual violence, leadership development, student organization advising, and other areas. University Village family housing facility is a 975 apartment international family housing facility serving approximately 3000 individuals, including over 900 children and approximately 954 families.

  • Provides guidance and direction on most complex operational issues and problems.
  • Responsible for the development of a community of 950 families and the functions of student conduct, leadership development, counseling, crisis management and emergency response, alcohol, drug and wellness education, leadership, and administration.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on issues related to college student development, including work with identity-based and ethnic groups, such as theme programs.
  • Collaborate with departmental, divisional and campus partners on developing, coordinating and assessing educational programs and services grounded in student development theory that address the community living and transition needs of populations that reflect the UC Berkeley student profile.
  • Partnerships include both internal (e.g. Academic Program Coordinators, Resident Faculty) and external (e.g., Dean of Students' Office, Center for Student Conduct, LEAD Center, Career Services, and New Student Services) partners, as well as other offices (e.g., College of Letters and Science) involved in programming for supporting students as they progress through Cal.
  • Counsels and evaluates employee performance.
  • Provide formal performance evaluations for paraprofessional staff members each academic semester.
  • Recommends employees for promotion, corrective action, hiring, and separation when appropriate.
  • Monitors employee performance and provides direction and assistance.
  • Supervise and train paraprofessional staff members.
  • Conduct hall staff meetings on a regular basis.
  • Provides training to subordinates.
  • Facilitate regular staff development sessions designed to provide additional training and team building for staff in the unit.
  • Assume a collateral assignment in such areas that support Residential Education, RSSP, and divisional initiatives.
  • Such assignments include Conference Services managed housing (e.g., Summer Sessions housing, Summer Bridge program), Hall Staff selection and training committees, curriculum development and teaching (e.g.,), and other special committee and assignments.
  • Respond on-site to manage emergent crises involving resident students, both during and outside of University business hours
