Carpet and Floor Care Specialist, Facilities Management - Main Campus

The Carpet and Floor Care Specialist performs specific cleaning and maintenance functions to provide a clean, safe environment. Areas of responsibility will include care of hard floors and tile surfaces, vacuuming carpets, carpet spotting to remove gum, paint, and other foreign matters, and carpet shampooing and extraction. The incumbent performs other duties as assigned including, but not limited, to snow and ice removal, clean up associated with water or fire damage, and special event support. Reporting to a Custodial Supervisor, the Carpet and Floor Specialist has additional duties that include but are not limited to:
  • Determines equipment and supplies needed to perform required tasks by looking at a floor or carpet and determining what needs to be done to ensure a high quality of standard.
  • Refinishes hard surfaces and resilient tile floors, adjacent moldings, elevator tracks, and trim, performing light, medium, and heavy shower scrubbing using the appropriate solutions and equipment.
  • Transports supplies and equipment needed to perform task and returns equipment to appropriate storage area, informing the supervisor of equipment supply and maintenance needs.
  • Cleans hallways, entrance ways, stairways and elevators, vacuums and spot cleans carpets and upholstery, and frees carpets of rips and strings, taping down clean edges as needed.
  • Cleans all surfaces and removes water marks and smudges from all surfaces, cleans and dusts lamp shades and bulbs, replaces burned out light bulbs, and empties or sifts ash urns.
  • Cleans administrative spaces, laboratories and classrooms, spot cleaning and shampooing carpets and upholstery using the acceptable method of cleaning.
  • Ensures economic use of supplies and materials to conserve University and department resources.
  • Draws and /or requisitions supplies, parts, and materials needed, using such items economically to avoid undue costs.
  • Keeps supervisor informed of supply and material needs to ensure that adequate inventory is maintained.
  • Provides supervisors and department management with advice and suggestions regarding work methods, procedures, parts, tools and related matters for the purpose of improving the effectiveness and cost of service.

Qualifications
  • High School diploma or high school equivalency
  • One year of custodial work experience and one-year minimum floor care experience preferred
  • A basic knowledge of English including the ability to read, write and speak English with understanding in order to read and understand product label instructions and University policies and procedures
  • Ability to relate custodial and maintenance problems clearly to supervisor and/or the Work Management Center
  • Ability to complete a training program in building cleaning
  • A valid driver's license from Maryland, Virginia or District of Columbia
