Staff Counsel - Office of General Counsel

Requirements

The Office of the General Counsel is responsible for the provision of legal services to the University and its officers, directors, administrators, faculty, and staff. The office provides legal advice and counsel on the broad spectrum of legal issues that arise in the operation of the University.

The Staff Counsel assists in the provision of legal services to the University community, focused primarily on a full range of contract, research, technology, and intellectual property matters. S/he is responsible for contract review and drafting, including federal contracts, procurement contracts, sponsored research agreements, technology agreements, custom education agreements, affiliation agreements, and investment agreements. Reporting to the Vice President and General Counsel and working day-to-day with the senior lawyers in the Office of General Counsel, the Staff Counsel has additional duties that include but are not limited to:
  • Assists the senior attorneys in the office in research and advising on transactional, probate administration, research, technology, intellectual property and compliance matters.


Requirements and Qualifications
  • D.C. bar membership (or immediate eligibility for such membership)
  • Three to five years of experience as a practicing attorney
  • Broad experience in general corporate matters is required, and familiarity with laws relevant to research, technology, intellectual property, government contracts (FAR), and higher education is preferred
  • Well-developed analytic and writing skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Collegial working style, sound judgment and flexibility


This is a one-year term position, with the possibility of renewal for an additional year.
